im flying from jfk to narita in like three weeks and honestly the thought of being stuck on a plane for 14 hours is making me so anxious i cant even sleep. i have a really hard time with sensory overload especially with engine noise and those high pitched whines and people talking. i really need some solid noise cancelling headphones and everyone says sony is the king right now. i looked into the wh-1000xm5 but then i saw they dont actually fold up which seems like a nightmare for my carry on since i already pack way too much stuff.

then i saw people saying the older xm4 is actually better for travel because it folds and the noise cancelling is basically the same but i also saw a video saying the auto-anc on the xm5 is way better for pressure changes in the air which makes me worried about that weird ear popping feeling if the tech isnt adjusting right. my budget is like 350 tops and i really just need something that wont die halfway over the pacific.

  • must have great battery
  • needs to be comfortable for 14 plus hours
  • needs to block out crying babies

i saw some people mention the earbuds too like the wf-1000xm5 but i feel like they might fall out if i fall asleep and then id be hunting for a tiny earbud under a plane seat in the dark which sounds like a total panic attack waiting to happen. basically i just want to be in a silent bubble for the whole trip. should i just go for the newer xm5 and deal with the bulky case or is the xm4 still the better move for a long haul...

Hey! Been diving into the specs for your trip and honestly, if you wanna save some serious cash while still getting that Sony magic, check out the Sony WH-CH720N Noise Cancelling Wireless Headphones. They are insanely light—only 192g—which is a total lifesaver for a 14 hour flight because they wont crush your skull. They actually use the Integrated Processor V1 from the flagship XM5 for the ANC, so for like a fraction of the price, you get fantastic noise blocking for those engine whines!! Battery life is a beast too, like 35 hours with ANC on, so youll make it to Tokyo and back basically. Another killer budget move is the Sony WH-XB910N EXTRA BASS Noise Cancelling Headphones if you want that folding design and massive bass. Both are way under your 350 cap and honestly the tech is amazing for the price point. TL;DR: Grab the CH720N for the lightest fit ever or XB910N if you need them to fold and want to save a ton of money over the XM5s.

> then i saw people saying the older xm4 is actually better for travel because it folds and the noise cancelling is basically the same Ive done that exact JFK route a couple times and honestly the folding design is a massive deal when your carry on is already packed to the brim. I remember taking my Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless Noise Canceling Over-the-Ear Headphones on a 15 hour haul and they were perfect. The newer Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Noise Canceling Headphones definitely have slightly better tech for the high pitched engine whine but the case is just so clunky... it doesnt fit in seat pockets well at all. Regarding the pressure thing, the xm4 has a manual optimizer button you just hold for a second and it fixes the cabin pressure feel immediately. I used it right after takeoff and it worked like a charm. For 14 hours of comfort and saving space in your bag, the xm4 is still the better travel tool imo. The battery is basically a tank too.

Just caught up on this thread. Regarding what #2 said about the budget model... honestly i gotta disagree. The CH720N is decent for a short commute, but for 14 hours over the ocean? Youll definitely feel the difference in ear fatigue and the seal isnt nearly as good for blocking engine drone. In my experience, you should just go for the Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Headphones. Youre probably worried about them not folding, but the case is actually quite slim. I usually just slide it into the laptop sleeve of my bag and it takes up way less room than youd think. The noise cancelling is noticeably better at handling those high-pitched sounds like crying babies than the older versions. If you really want a silent bubble for that long JFK-Narita flight, its worth the extra space. TL;DR: Dont settle for budget gear; the Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Headphones offer the best silence for sensory issues.
