I'm going to Japan next month and it's a huge 14 hour flight. I really need some good headphones because the noise on planes drives me crazy but I have no idea where to start with all the different Sony models. Sorry if this is a dumb question but which ones should I buy for a long trip?

Saw this earlier. I had issues with over-ears on my last trip because they get way too hot, tbh. Unfortunately, the Sony WF-1000XM5 Noise Canceling Truly Wireless Earbuds are also risky since the battery wont last the full 14 hours. Quick tip: Disable Speak-to-Chat so your audio doesnt pause when you cough. Are you planning to sleep much on the flight? TL;DR: Buds are cooler but battery life is a concern.

In my experience, you dont always need the latest model to get peace and quiet. Ive taken dozens of long-haul flights and always go back to the Sony WH-1000XM4 Noise Canceling Wireless Over-Ear Headphones. They fold down better than the new version, which keeps them safe in a crowded carry-on. Honestly, look for a deal on older stock. Itll save you a hundred bucks for snacks in Tokyo.

Saw this earlier but just getting back to you. Honestly, I have been pretty disappointed with the direction Sony went lately with their high-end gear. I bought the Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Noise Canceling Headphones thinking they would be the holy grail for travel, but I had issues with the physical design. It feels much more fragile than it should for that price, and since they dont fold up, they occupy way too much space in a carry-on. The noise canceling is technically superior, but the lack of portability is a real letdown for a 14-hour flight. If you want something more cost-effective, the Sony WH-CH720N Noise Canceling Wireless Over-Ear Headphones are actually a more practical choice for a long haul. They are significantly lighter than the flagship models, so they dont cause as much pressure on your skull after several hours. Unfortunately, the build quality feels a bit plasticky and the noise canceling isnt as effective, so you will still hear the engine drone slightly tho. I also tested the Sony WH-CH520 Wireless On-Ear Headphones to save money, but the experience was not as good as expected. The lack of active noise canceling makes them basically useless on a loud Boeing or Airbus. If you are going to Japan, definitely stick to an over-ear model with ANC. Just be aware that the expensive ones arent always the most durable for stuffing into a backpack...
