What are the best Sony headphones for frequent air travel?

I have several long-haul flights coming up and need a reliable pair of Sony headphones. I'm torn between the WH-1000XM4 and XM5. Since I need something that blocks engine noise perfectly and stays comfortable for hours, which model is better for frequent flyers? Is the XM5’s improved ANC worth the lack of a folding design?

Hey! Sooo, I've spent a lot of time with both of these on long flights, and for your situation, I would suggest going with the Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones. Honestly, the noise cancellation is literally on another level because it uses two processors—the V1 and the HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN1—along with 8 microphones. It targets that high-pitched jet engine whine way better than the Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones ever did.

But yeah, the lack of a folding hinge on the XM5 is kinda annoying... it takes up way more space in your bag. If youre a light packer, you might hate the bigger case. However, the XM5 has a thinner headband and these new "soft fit leather" ear pads that dont put as much pressure on ur head during an 8-hour flight. Basically, it feels lighter even though the weight is similar.

Technical-wise, the XM4 has a 40mm driver which gives a bit more bass punch, whereas the XM5 uses a 30mm carbon fiber driver. I think the 30mm sounds more refined and clear, tho maybe slightly less "boomy" in the low end. Plus, the Auto NC Optimizer on the newer model is highkey clutch cuz it automatically adjusts the ANC based on the atmospheric pressure in the cabin without you having to run a manual calibration tool every time you reach cruising altitude.

So yeah, if you have the room in ur carry-on, the ANC upgrade on the XM5 is definitely worth it. gl!

Saw this earlier but just now responding. In my experience, understanding how ANC works helps you save a ton of money. Basically, its amazing at constant low frequencies - like jet engines - but still struggles with high-pitched voices. Since the engine drone problem was basically solved years ago, newer models mostly just refine the voice cancellation part. Thats why the price hike for newer gear isnt always worth it for flyers. Like others mentioned, the Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones and Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones are the top choices. But honestly? I had issues with the XM5 being SO bulky - it barely fit in my bag - and it felt a bit fragile.

Here's what I recommend for frequent travel:
- Stick with the Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones cuz they fold up small.
- Grab a Twelve South AirFly Pro Bluetooth Transmitter for the in-flight movies.

Unfortunately, the XM5 ANC isnt a big enough jump to lose that folding design. gl!

To add to the point above: Spravkirts is totally right about the bag space issue. Honestly, I've been pretty disappointed with the latest design direction Sony took with the Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones. I travel for work constantly and they just feel way too clunky in my backpack since they dont fold down. Plus, I actually had issues with the headband pressure after about four hours... it's just not as comfy as the older ones for those 10-hour marathons. If the bulk is a dealbreaker but you want newer tech than the XM4, you might wanna check out the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones. They actually fold up properly into a compact case and the noise cancellation is incredible for low-end engine hum, maybe even a bit better than Sony tbh. Another path is going with high-end in-ears. The Sony WF-1000XM5 Truly Wireless Noise Cancelling Earbuds are a solid shout for flying. They take up basically zero space and the foam tips block out way more cabin noise than you'd expect. Lemme know if you want more info on how the battery life holds up on those long hauls tho, happy to share more of my experience.

Ok so, in my experience, the Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones is actually the better choice for flying. Basically, that folding design is HUGE for saving bag space. Honestly, the Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones has better ANC tech, but those fixed hinges feel a bit more fragile... I mean, its risky if youre cramming gear into a backpack.

TL;DR: Stick with the XM4 for portability and durability; the XM5 is just too bulky.

Raymond is spot on about the headband pressure. I stumbled on this thread and had to chime in because I had the exact same experience during a flight to London last month. The older folding style is just way more practical for real world travel where every inch of bag space matters. A few things I noticed after switching between brands:

  • Sonys noise cancelling is top tier but can feel a bit heavy on the ears
  • Bose usually offers a lighter fit for marathon sessions
  • Older models often have better physical switches which I prefer over touch pads In my experience, the tiny upgrade in noise cancellation on the latest model doesnt really justify the extra bulk in your carry-on. Tbh I went back to my older pair because they just felt more invisible during 10 hour stints. Definitely look at how you pack before pulling the trigger.
