Just bought a Sony FX3 for a wedding I'm filming this Saturday but the screen is way too small and I'm totally lost. I have like $300 left to spend and no clue which monitors or cables even work with this camera. Sorry if this is a dumb question but what should I buy?
> Just bought a Sony FX3 for a wedding I'm filming this Saturday but the screen is way too small and I'm totally lost. Honestly, it sucks that Sony still puts such tiny screens on these cameras. I remember my first summer wedding with the FX3... the glare was so bad I couldn't even tell if the brides face was in focus. Total nightmare. Unfortunately, most monitors in your price range are kind of a letdown because they aren't bright enough for daylight. If you're stuck at $300, the FeelWorld LUT7 7-Inch 2200nit Daylight Viewable Monitor is basically your only real option for visibility. I'll be real, the fan on mine is kinda loud and it feels a bit cheap, but that 2200 nits brightness is the only reason I didn't ruin that shoot. You absolutely need that for outdoor ceremonies or you'll be flying blind. Dont forget the accessories tho. I've had generic HDMI cables fail on me mid-vows, which is the worst feeling ever. Grab a Zitay Ultra Thin HDMI 2.0 Cable because they're way more reliable and don't put stress on the camera port. For power, I'd suggest the SmallRig NP-F970 USB-C Rechargeable Camera Battery. I was disappointed with generic NP-Fs before, but these ones are solid and you can charge them with a phone brick. Just make sure you test everything before Saturday... last minute gear fails are the absolute worst.
^ This. Also, I've been really satisfied with the Atomos Shinobi 5-inch 4K HDMI on my rig. It's super reliable. Since you're on a budget, try looking at the used section on B&H or Adorama... you can find gems there. Just make sure you get a Kondor Blue Braided High Speed HDMI Cable because cheap cables are risky. CineD has a great gear database if you want to compare technical specs before Saturday.
My old setup worked so well once I finally added a screen. IIRC you need:
