Hey everyone! I finally made the jump and picked up the Sony a7C II. I absolutely love how much power is packed into such a small body, and it has honestly made me want to go out and shoot more often without the bulk of my old gear. I have a big trip coming up next month through the Dolomites and some coastal towns in Italy, and I am currently stuck trying to find the perfect travel tripod to pair with this camera.
My old tripod is a heavy aluminum beast that completely defeats the purpose of having a compact full-frame system. I am looking for something that is lightweight and portable enough to strap to the side of a 25L daypack or even fit inside it, but it still needs to be sturdy enough for long exposures during blue hour. It feels a bit ridiculous putting such a sleek, modern camera on a massive, chunky tripod that weighs more than the rest of my kit combined.
I have been eyeing a few different models, but I am having a hard time deciding. Here are a few specific requirements I am trying to hit:
I looked at the Peak Design Carbon Fiber tripod, and while the design is incredible, the price tag is pretty steep. I have also seen some carbon fiber options from brands like Sirui and Ulanzi that look promising, but I am a little worried about the long-term durability and how they handle windy conditions. I really do not want to sacrifice too much stability just to save a few ounces, but I also do not want to go back to carrying a tank.
Does anyone have a go-to recommendation for a tripod that feels like the right scale for the a7C II? I would love to hear what you are using and if you have found a good balance between portability and performance. What is your favorite compact setup for travel photography?
Respectfully, I'd consider another option. I've tried many travel setups over the years, and honestly, I've learned the hard way that chasing the absolute smallest folded length usually leads to heartbreak in windy spots like the Dolomites. I once brought a super-flimsy carbon tripod to the Alps and every single blue hour shot came out blurry... it was literally a total waste of a hike. I think you need a bit more meat on the legs for that 20-70mm lens if you want sharp shots.
I tried the Ulanzi & Coman Zero Y Lightweight Travel Tripod but it was way too shaky for its 33lb rating. Disappointed tbh. TL;DR: Cheap carbon fiber usually fails in wind... dont waste ur money!
Can vouch for this
Oh man, I totally get where youre coming from! I was in your exact shoes just a few months ago after I got my camera! I am honestly such a nervous wreck when it comes to my gear... I kept worrying about a gust of wind knocking everything over or my shots coming out all shaky. For my first big trip, I spent weeks just practicing in my backyard because I was so paranoid about the legs failing or the head slipping during a long exposure. It was kind of a journey learning to trust the gear! Here is basically what I learned while trying to find that perfect balance:
