I finally pulled the trigger on the Sony a7C II last week and man this thing is tiny compared to my old dslr. Im heading to Japan for a two-week walking tour next month and I really want to keep my kit as lean as possible because we are gonna be doing like 20k steps a day easy. My logic was that since the camera is so compact I should go for the smallest accessories but then I started looking at the SmallRig baseplates and now im second guessing everything.
I read online that the extension grip makes it way more comfortable for big hands but doesnt that just ruin the whole point of buying a small camera body? Like if I add an extra half inch of metal at the bottom am I just turning it back into a bigger a7IV anyway? It feels a bit weird in the hand without the pinky resting on something but I dont want to add unnecessary weight if I can avoid it.
Then there is the strap situation. I keep seeing people recommend the Peak Design Leash because its thin but then others say the Slide Lite is better if you have a heavier lens like the 20-70mm f4 which is what I might bring. I dont want the strap cutting into my neck all day but I also dont want it to look like im carrying a bulky seatbelt. I was also thinking about extra batteries but the NP-FZ100 is supposed to be pretty solid right? Should I bother with a dedicated charger or just use usb-c in the hotel? I saw some guy on a blog saying you need a screen protector immediately because the coating is soft but then another thread said they cause glare and make the touch screen less responsive.
Budget is around 300 bucks for the extras since I already spent a fortune on the glass. Im mostly shooting street stuff and some landscape at Mt Fuji. Do I really need a thumb grip? I saw those ones that slide into the hot shoe but im worried it might block the dials. Just trying to figure out what is actually essential and what is just gear acquisition syndrome kicking in. What are you guys actually using day to day that doesnt bulk it up too much...
Regarding what #1 said about "Man, youre gonna love that a7C II in..." - honestly, I have to disagree a bit on the baseplate. In my experience, once you start adding metal plates and extension grips, you are basically negating why you bought a compact body. If you are doing 20k steps, every single gram starts to suck by noon. I’ve tried many setups over the years and the Haoge THB-CB Thumb Up Grip is a way better fix for big hands. It slides into the hot shoe and gives you that leverage without adding a half-inch of weight to the bottom. For the strap, just stick with the Peak Design Leash Camera Strap. Its plenty strong enough for the Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G and way less annoying than a thick strap rubbing your neck in the heat. Also, skip the dedicated charger to save cash. Just grab a Anker Nano II 65W USB C Charger and charge the body directly at night. Its faster and one less thing to lose in a hotel room...
Man, youre gonna love that a7C II in Japan. Ive been shooting Sony for a decade and honestly, the whole small vs comfortable debate is a total trap. If youre doing 20k steps, those tiny ergonomic issues turn into actual pain by day three. The SmallRig Baseplate for Sony Alpha 7C II / 7CR 4438 is a lifesaver. It doesnt turn the camera into a bulky a7IV, it just gives your hand a place to actually rest. I tried going without one on a trip to Seoul and my hand was cramping constantly. It adds almost no weight... basically just a bit of hollow aluminum. Heres what I actually recommend for a lean kit:
Might want to be careful with slow cards. I used Sony TOUGH-G series SDXC UHS-II 128GB V90 to avoid buffering issues. TL;DR: fast storage is worth the $150 price tag.
