Im getting so frustrated trying to pick a monitor for my a7S III cinema rig. Every single person on YouTube says to just buy the Atomos Ninja V but then I go into the forums and everyone is complaining about fan noise and overheating issues which makes me nervous as hell for my long takes. I also looked at the Portkeys stuff but the menu system looks like a total mess and I really dont have time to learn a weird UI right now.

I have a shoot coming up in San Diego next month and I need something that actually works under the sun without me needing a massive hood. My constraints are:

  • Budget is strictly under $550
  • High brightness (need at least 2000 nits)
  • Must have reliable touch screen focus assist
  • Lightweight enough for a handheld gimbal setup

Are there any hidden gems I missed or should I just gamble on the Ninja V...

You might want to be careful with power consumption tho. Quick question:

Honestly, forget the Ninja V if you are worried about fan noise and dont need external RAW recording. In my experience, those fans can definitely get picked up by on-camera mics during quiet scenes or long takes. Over the years I have tried many of these budget high-bright options and I usually point people toward the Feelworld LUT6 6 Inch 2600nit Ultra Bright Touch Screen Monitor. It is incredibly light for a gimbal setup and at 2600 nits, you can actually see what you are doing in that San Diego sun without messing with a hood. The UI is basically a clone of SmallHD so it is way more intuitive than that Portkeys mess you mentioned. I have used it on my a7S III for full days and never had it overheat on me once. If you want something slightly larger for handheld work, the Feelworld LUT7 7 Inch 2200nit Ultra Brightness is also solid but it starts to feel a bit heavy on a gimbal after an hour. Another hidden gem I have used is the Desview R6 UHB 5.5 Inch 2800nit Touchscreen Monitor. It is stupidly bright and fits your budget easily. The build quality feels a bit more plastic than the Atomos stuff but for the price it gets the job done without the fan headache. Just make sure you pack a bunch of extra NP-F750 batteries because these high-bright panels eat power like crazy... seriously, they drain fast.
