Which prime lens works best for portraits on Sony a7R V?

So I finally bit the bullet and got the a7R V because that 61mp sensor is just insane for detail but now I'm stressing over glass. I've been looking at the Sony 85mm f1.4 GM since everyone says it's the gold standard for portraits but then I saw some reviews saying the autofocus is kinda slow and loud compared to the newer stuff and I'm worried it wont keep up with that crazy AI tracking on the body. My logic was that the 85mm would give that nice compression but then I started looking at the 50mm f1.2 GM because people say it's way sharper on high res sensors. But is 50mm too wide? I'm doing a series of corporate headshots and some creative portraits for a friend in a studio in Chicago next month and I've got about $1800 to spend so I can really only pick one pro prime right now.

I read that the Sigma 85mm DG DN is a great alternative too but some people on reddit were saying the bokeh looks busy compared to the Sony glass. Here is basically what I'm looking for:

  • extreme sharpness to match the 61mp
  • fast enough focus for moving subjects
  • that creamy melted background look

I'm just torn because if I'm spending this much I want it to actually resolve all those megapixels without being too clinical or harsh on skin tones... what are you guys using for the high res bodies?

Get the Sony FE 50mm f1.2 GM! Its amazing and basically the safest choice for that AI tracking. Check Lensrentals blog for MTF charts. TL;DR: Native GM is bulletproof!

Building on the earlier suggestion, I have to throw the Sony FE 135mm f1.8 GM into the ring! I saw this post earlier and had to jump in because I went through this exact struggle with my a7R V last year. if you want that melted background and ridiculous sharpness that actually uses all 61 megapixels, this is the one. I used it for some creative portraits in a studio setting recently and the eye-tracking was flawless... literally stuck like glue even when the model was moving around. Quick tips for this beast:

  • Make sure you have enough physical space because 135mm is tight compared to a 50 or 85.
  • Use the focus limiter switch to make the AF even snappier for headshots. It is a bit of a workout for your wrist but honestly, the images look like medium format. I was blown away by the skin tones too. It isnt clinical at all, just super detailed and smooth!

  • Honestly, grab the Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN Art!
  • It handles 61mp amazingly well and costs only $1100. It's fantastic value and I love it!
