Honestly im just fed up with my current setup because the cheap 85mm i have keeps hunting for focus and the purple fringing is just awful on the high res sensor of my a7R V. It feels like im wasting all those megapixels and i have a big outdoor wedding shoot in Portland next month and i cant deal with soft images anymore. Ive been thinking about what to get next but i keep going back and forth between the fancy GM glass or maybe something like the Sigma because i really need to stay under $1400 if possible.

  • sharp enough for 61mp
  • fast autofocus for moving subjects
  • nice creamy bokeh for headshots
  • weight matters a bit but not too much

What are you guys actually using that doesnt frustrate you every ten minutes?

Dude, i feel your pain with the purple fringing! Honestly, that a7R V is a beast and it really exposes any flaws in your glass, especially with that 61mp sensor. If you want to stay under that 1400 mark and get insane results, you gotta look at the Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN Art for Sony E-mount. It is absolutely incredible. I've been using it for a while now and the sharpness is just ridiculous even wide open. It basically lives on my camera for outdoor portraits. The autofocus is super snappy too which is what you need for those wedding moments where you cant afford to hunt. Ngl, the new Sony GM II is amazing but its also way more expensive and honestly the Sigma gets you like 95 percent of the way there for way less cash. Plus its way lighter than the old DSLR versions of the 85mm art. You save like 400 or 500 bucks compared to the high end Sony glass which leaves you extra money for like, extra batteries or a nice strap for the Portland gig. If you really want to save some serious dough tho, the Sony FE 85mm f1.8 is a hidden gem. It isnt as pro as the Sigma but the focus is lightning fast. But for a high res sensor and that creamy bokeh you're after, the Sigma is the one. It handles the chromatic aberration way better than the cheap primes out there. You're gonna love it for those outdoor shots... just make sure to grab it before your trip!

Just caught this thread and i gotta say... it is actually kind of depressing how many lenses fail once you hit that 61mp mark. I tried making the older Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM work for a while because everyone raves about the bokeh, but unfortunately it was a total letdown on my a7R V. The autofocus motor sounds like an old coffee grinder and it just cannot keep up with a bride walking down the aisle. It is frustrating when you spend that much and it still hunts. If you are really looking to stay under that 1400 cap and want something that actually feels modern, i would seriously look at these:

  • Sony FE 50mm f/1.4 GM
  • This is basically the sweet spot. It is lighter than the f1.2 version, cheaper, and honestly i cant tell the difference in sharpness. It is tack sharp even wide open.
  • Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 GM
  • You might have to find this used to hit your price point, but the compression is insane for portraits. I usually check the Fred Miranda forums or look at the MTF charts on Brian Smiths site before i buy anything now. High res sensors are super picky about glass quality. Ngl, that Portland wedding is gonna be gorgeous, but you definitely dont want to be fighting your gear while youre there. Grab the 50mm GM if you can, it is night and day compared to the older stuff.
