What is the best portrait lens for the Sony a7R V?

I recently made the jump to the Sony a7R V, and honestly, I’m a bit blown away by how much detail this 61MP sensor captures. I’ve been using some of my older glass from my a7 III days, but I’m starting to feel like my current lenses aren't quite sharp enough to do this body justice, especially when it comes to high-end portrait work.

I’m looking for that perfect blend of tack-sharp focus on the eyes and a really creamy, smooth bokeh for the background. I’ve been eyeing the Sony 85mm f/1.4 GM, but since it’s one of the older G Master lenses, I’m worried it might struggle to fully resolve the 61 megapixels compared to the newer releases. I’ve also heard incredible things about the 50mm f/1.2 GM and even the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art, which seems like a great value.

Since this camera has such an advanced autofocus system, I really want a lens that can keep up with the eye-tracking without hunting. Does anyone here have hands-on experience shooting portraits with this specific body? If you had to pick just one 'holy grail' portrait lens to pair with the a7R V, which one would you recommend to get the most out of the sensor?

hey, i feel u on the a7R V struggle. that 61MP sensor is *brutal* on older glass. honestly, i had issues with the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM when I upgraded. unfortunately, its old motor tech just feels clunky now. on a body with that insane AI tracking, the lens literally struggles to keep up, leading to micro-jitters that ruin the tack-sharp look you're after.

here's what i recommend for the best results:
1. look at the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art. it's way sharper for the high-res sensor and half the price.
2. if you want the absolute holy grail, the Sony FE 50mm f/1.2 GM is the real winner. it uses four XD linear motors, so it's silent and basically instant.

the micro-contrast on that sigma is actually better for 61 megapixels anyway. it’s a bummer the original 85 GM aged like it did, but save ur money and go for the newer optics... peace

For your situation, I would suggest the Sony FE 50mm f/1.2 GM. Honestly, the older 85mm GM might struggle with that 61MP sensor’s tracking, which could be risky for pro work. To be safe, you might want to consider the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art instead. Just make sure to test the AF speed first so it doesn't hunt... it's a beast but can be finicky. gl!

I went down a total rabbit hole looking at MTF charts and market comparisons when I first got my high-res body because I was worried about the exact same thing. Its basically a choice between the first-party ecosystem and the third-party value propositions right now. Honestly, I spent weeks comparing the technical specs before just trying a few out to see how they actually felt in the field.

  • Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 GM
  • This was my wild card choice during my research. Its arguably the sharpest lens in the whole line-up and handles the 61MP sensor way better than the older 85mm. The compression for portraits is insane, though you need a lot of room to work with it.
  • Samyang AF 85mm f/1.4 FE II
  • I was skeptical of the third-party brands at first but the Series II is actually pretty decent. It doesnt quite have that GM magic in the bokeh transitions, but for the price, it holds its own surprisingly well for high-res work.
  • Sony FE 50mm f/1.4 GM
  • Everyone talks about the f1.2 but I actually looked into this one because its newer. It seems to be optimized specifically for these newer sensors and the autofocus is basically silent and instant. I ended up feeling like the 135mm was the true holy grail for resolution, even if it is a bit long for some studios. Tbh there is so much data out there that it gets confusing, but those three really stood out during my search.

Would love to know this too

High-res sensors like the a7R V basically need modern glass to resolve detail. If ur motors are slow, ur missing shots!! I went through this last year and lowkey fell in love with the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art. It's around $1,000—literally half the price of newer GMs—and actually keeps up with that AI tracking perfectly. The sharpness is honestly amazing for the cost!! lol
