So I finally upgraded to the a7R V and man that 61 megapixel sensor is no joke but it is absolutely destroying my older glass. I thought my old 24mm was sharp enough but looking at the files from my scout trip yesterday the corners are just mushy and there is some nasty fringing I never noticed before. I have a big landscape trip to Iceland coming up in exactly two weeks and I need a prime that can actually resolve this much detail. I have about $2000 to spend maybe a bit more if it is worth it but I am panicking a little because I cant have blurry edges on these glacier shots. What is the absolute sharpest landscape prime for this body?
Quick reply while I have a sec! You definitely need glass that can keep up with those 61MP. Go check out the sharpness rankings on the Sony Alpha Blog site, it is a lifesaver! Heres my top picks for Iceland:
^ This. Also, dont forget that 61MP is a double-edged sword when it comes to handheld shots. I learned that the hard way in Norway a couple years back when I thought I was being clever shooting at 1/60th... every single frame had tiny micro-jitters that the high res sensor just magnified. In my experience, if you want the absolute sharpest reliable glass for those glacier details, you cant beat the Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM. I've tried many lenses over the years, and this one basically nails the corners even wide open. It is clinical in a good way. Quick tip tho: lock everything down on a heavy tripod. Iceland wind is no joke and it will make even the best glass look mushy if you arent careful. Better to be safe than sorry with those once-in-a-lifetime shots, right?
Honestly my current setup is the absolute sharpest glass I have ever used on that body! I went through the same panic before a big trip and here is what changed for me:
Can confirm
