Ive been shooting Sony for like 5 years now mostly with primes but I just upgraded to the a7 IV and I'm realizing I'm tired of swapping glass every five minutes. Im heading to Tokyo in like three weeks for a vacation and I really just want one lens that can handle street stuff and some landscape without being a total brick in my bag. I was looking at the 24-70 GM II but its so pricey and then there is the Sigma 24-70 DG DN which everyone talks about. I need something fast enough for low light but versatile. What do you guys think is the absolute best all-around zoom for this body right now?

Honestly, if you're worried about price and weight for a big trip, you might want to consider skipping the Sony. The Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II is technically the best, but it's a massive investment just to avoid swapping glass. I'd suggest looking at the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 instead. It's way lighter than the others and much cheaper, tho you lose that bit of width on the 24mm end which might be tough for landscapes. If you really need the wider angle, the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II Art is a solid middle ground. Just be careful with older Sigma models because they can be real bricks. Tokyo involves a ton of walking, so make sure to prioritize weight or your neck is gonna be killing you by day three. Personally, I'd grab the Tamron and save the cash for more sushi.

Thinking about your Tokyo trip, the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II Art is probably the smartest play for an a7 IV right now. The original was a bit of a tank, but the Mark II version is significantly lighter and sharper, making it way easier to carry around all day. Heres why it works for travel:

  • Autofocus is snappy enough for fast-paced street photography.
  • Way cheaper than the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II with almost identical performance.
  • Physical aperture ring and custom buttons give you quick control without diving into menus. If you can sacrifice the f/2.8 for better landscapes, the Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G is also worth a look. That 20mm wide end is killer for cramped city streets and architecture. Its also tiny. Just depends on how much low light shooting you actually plan on doing while youre out there.
