Top telephoto lens recommendations for the Sony a9 III?

I finally pulled the trigger and upgraded to the Sony a9 III, and I am absolutely blown away by the global shutter technology. However, I’m now realizing that my older glass might not be able to keep up with this beast! I’m primarily shooting fast-action sports and some local wildlife, so I really need a telephoto setup that doesn't bottleneck the 120fps burst rate or the insane autofocus tracking.

I currently have the 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II on my shortlist because I’ve heard it’s one of the few that can fully utilize the camera's speed, but I’m also considering something with more reach like the 200-600mm G. My main concern is whether the 200-600mm's internal motor is actually fast enough to stay locked on during those high-speed bursts, or if I’ll see a drop in hit rate compared to the newer GM primes. I’ve also looked at the 300mm f/2.8 GM, but it's a huge investment.

Has anyone here spent significant time testing different telephotos on the a9 III? Which lens do you feel offers the best balance of reach and speed to truly take advantage of the 120fps blackout-free shooting?

1. Honestly, snag a used Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS for like $1,800.
2. In my experience, its motors basically crush 120fps compared to cheaper zooms, you know?

Ok so, i totally get the excitement but you gotta be *super* careful with lens choices for the Sony a9 III Digital Camera Body cuz that 120fps is no joke. Tbh, I think the Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS might actually struggle to keep that hit rate at the max burst speed... the motors just aren't as snappy as the dual XD linears in the newer GMs. I mean, it'll probably work for slower stuff, but you might see some soft frames if things are really flying. In my experience, I would suggest sticking with the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II as your baseline. It's basically the only zoom I trust to fully keep up with that insane AF tracking without bottlenecking. If u really need reach, honestly the Sony FE 300mm f/2.8 GM OSS is the 'safe' pro choice, even if it's a huge investment. Just make sure to check the official compatibility list first, cuz some older glass is lowkey capped at way lower speeds. Better safe than sorry! gl!!

Respectfully, I'd consider another option! I think the 100-400mm motors might be a bit slow for 120fps? Ngl, the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II is the real MVP!! It has like four XD linear motors which i think are needed for that speed? Plus, pairing it with a Sony FE 2.0x Teleconverter is such a budget win for wildlife reach without losing AF! i mean, it saves tons of money vs the primes lol. 👍
