Hey everyone! I recently upgraded to the Sony a7C II and I am absolutely loving the compact form factor for everyday carry. I have been trying to get more into street photography lately, but I am really struggling to find a wide-angle lens that actually feels balanced on such a small body. I want to keep the kit as discrete as possible while still getting that wide perspective for tight city streets and architecture.

I have been looking for something wider than 35mm, ideally in the 20mm to 24mm range, but most of the high-end glass seems way too front-heavy for this specific camera. I really want something that I can slide into a small sling bag without having to detach the lens every single time.

I am mainly prioritizing these things:

  • A very small physical profile, ideally a pancake or G series small prime.
  • Fast and silent autofocus for grabbing quick shots of people passing by.
  • Decent low-light performance since I love shooting during blue hour.

I have been eyeing the Sony 24mm f/2.8 G, but I have also heard mixed things about some of the Samyang tiny series. Does anyone have a setup they love for this specific body? What do you think is the best compact wide-angle lens for the a7C II?

I have run the numbers on weight distribution for the a7C II quite a bit lately. If you want that discrete kit, the Sony FE 24mm f/2.8 G is the objective winner here. It only weighs 162g and the dual linear motors provide nearly instantaneous AF tracking which is vital for street stuff. Alternatively, the Samyang AF 24mm f/1.8 FE offers better low-light performance with that wider aperture. However, its 71mm long compared to the Sonys 45mm, so it starts to feel a bit front-heavy on such a small chassis. Heres a quick breakdown:

  • Sony 24mm G: Best AF speed, very compact, physical aperture ring.
  • Samyang 24mm f/1.8: Better f-stop for blue hour, larger footprint. Honestly, the Sony FE 24mm f/2.8 G is what I would go with. The rendering is sharp across the frame and the handling is just superior for daily carry... the balance is basically perfect.

Just catching up on this thread. If you can handle a slightly larger footprint for that low-light performance you mentioned, definitely look at Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G. Its still really light but the extra stop of light is huge for blue hour. Quick tip: use the CameraSize website to visualize how it balances on your a7C II before buying. Its saved me a ton of money on returns, tbh.

Quick reply while I have a sec here... honestly I'm a big fan of the a7C II but the lens prices can get crazy fast. Before I dive into all the technical specs, what's your actual budget looking like? Are you trying to keep it under a certain amount, or are you okay spending more for that premium feel? If you want the best bang for your buck, you should definitely check out the Tamron 24mm f/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2. It's super light and usually goes for a fraction of the Sony glass. The optics are punchy, though the AF is a bit noisier than the G series, which might be a dealbreaker for discrete street work. Another sleeper hit is the Sigma 24mm f/3.5 DG DN Contemporary. It's part of their I-series, so the build quality is insane for such a small lens. It fits the a7C II profile perfectly without feeling front-heavy at all. Lemme know about your budget and I can give you a better breakdown!
