What is the absolute fastest SSD I can get for my new PS5 Pro right now? I have no idea where to start and honestly I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the different numbers and speeds people talk about. I just got my Pro today here in Chicago and I'm already out of room because I downloaded basically my whole library and now its full. I have about $180 to spend and I'm hoping to run over to Best Buy tonight before they close to pick something up. Do I need a specific heat sink thing or does it come with it? I've seen stuff about Gen 5 drives but I dont even know if they work or if I should just stick to the Sony recommended ones. Sorry if this is a stupid question I just dont want to mess up my new console...

Building on the earlier suggestion, honestly you dont need to stress about Gen 5 at all. The PS5 Pro hardware is capped at Gen 4 speeds, so if you buy a Gen 5 drive, itll just downclock to match the console and you'll have wasted a ton of cash for zero actual benefit. I went through the same confusion when I first upgraded. If youre heading to Best Buy in Chicago tonight, look for the Samsung 990 PRO 2TB NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD with Heatsink. Its arguably the fastest Gen 4 drive on the market and usually fits right inside that $180 budget if there is a sale going on. About the heatsink thing... yeah you definitely need one. Sony is pretty strict about that because these NVMe drives get hot as hell when they're moving massive chunks of 4K game data. If you buy a bare drive without a heatsink, it might throttle or eventually fail from the heat. Most of the premium options like the Seagate FireCuda 530 2TB NVMe PCIe Gen4 SSD with Heatsink come with one pre-installed, so just look for that on the packaging. Installation is basically just one screw, so dont be intimidated by the process. Just make sure the read speeds are rated at least 5,500 MB/s, though most high-end ones now hit 7,000 MB/s plus. Ive been super satisfied with my 990 Pro, speeds are blazing and I never see any lag during transfers or load screens.

Just found this thread. @Reply #2 - good point! To summarize the discussion, Gen 4 drives are sufficient and a heatsink is essential. I would suggest considering the Crucial P5 Plus 2TB NVMe SSD with Heatsink as a budget-friendly alternative.

  • It meets all technical requirements
  • Usually priced below your $180 limit Make sure to confirm the model includes the heatsink so you dont have issues.

I've been very satisfied with the WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB NVMe SSD with Heatsink in my own console. It works well and I've had no complaints regarding performance. Gen 5 drives wont actually give you a boost on PS5 Pro so save your cash. You can usually grab the 2TB model at Best Buy within your budget. Buying it with the heatsink already attached is much easier so you dont mess anything up.
