Which internal SSD for the PS5 is actually the fastest right now? Im finally upgrading my storage because I literally have zero space left for the Elden Ring DLC coming up. I did some looking around and it seems like it's a toss up between the WD Black SN850X and the Samsung 990 Pro.

People say the 990 Pro is crazy fast but I keep seeing posts about the SN850X being more stable for long gaming sessions because of the heatsink design. I got about $180 saved up and I really want the best performance possible for my setup here in Cali. Does the read speed difference even matter in real life gaming or am I overthinking the numbers...

Yo, you are definitely overthinking the numbers a bit, but dont worry, basically everyone does when they first start looking at specs. Honestly, for the PS5, once you pass that 5500MB/s threshold Sony recommends, you wont really notice a difference in loading screens. We are talking tiny fractions of a second here. I have been using the Western Digital WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB NVMe SSD with Heatsink for about a year now and honestly its been solid. Zero complaints. I went with it because the heatsink is built like a tank and I never have to worry about it thermal throttling during a long gaming session. I am super satisfied with how it handles big open world stuff like Elden Ring too... everything is smooth as butter. The Samsung 990 Pro 2TB NVMe PCIe 4.0 with Heatsink is also a beast, but sometimes you pay a premium for that brand name. If you can find the SN850X on sale, usually around $150 or $160, jump on it. Use that extra cash for the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. Both are gonna feel way better than having zero space left. Just make sure whatever you get has the heatsink pre-installed if you dont want to mess with a separate one. It is just easier that way and works well right out of the box. Ngl the peace of mind of having that extra storage is the best part.

I have been analyzing this exact scenario for my own hardware! If you prioritize data safety and thermal stability, you absolutely must check out the Seagate FireCuda 530 2TB NVMe SSD with Heatsink. It is amazing for heavy gaming sessions!

  • Superior 2550 TBW rating for incredible longevity
  • Custom EKWB heatsink design
  • Blazing 7300MB/s speeds I prioritize high endurance because it ensures your data stays safe for years. Honestly, its a fantastic choice!

@Reply #2 - good point! Thermals are definitely the priority for long sessions. In my experience, most users overpay for speeds the console cannot fully utilize. Since you want to maximize your $180, I suggest the Crucial T500 2TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD with Heatsink. It is reliable and highly efficient. Quick tip: always buy the integrated heatsink model to guarantee it fits the PS5 bay dimensions perfectly without extra DIY work.

Honestly, I've had a pretty disappointing run with the big name brands lately. I bought the Samsung 990 Pro 2TB NVMe SSD, but unfortunately it gave me nothing but headaches with firmware issues right out of the box. Had to hook it up to a PC just to get it working right which was a total vibe killer. Then I tried the WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB NVMe SSD and it just ran way hotter than I liked during my weekend marathons here in the Cali heat... wasnt as good as expected for the price tag. If you want something that actually performs without the big brand tax or the weird thermal spikes I dealt with, I eventually landed on these:

Re: @Reply #2 - good point! Thermals are definitely the priority. In my experience, keeping things cool is the only way to ensure a drive actually lasts, but honestly I have the exact same problem as you right now.

  • I have been dealing with this for like two months and still cant find a straight answer.
  • It is so frustrating because I prioritize reliability above everything else, yet every drive seems to have some kind of catch that makes me nervous.
  • Im basically stuck in this endless cycle of comparing specs and then getting worried about long-term failure... honestly just want to get my storage sorted before the DLC drops too but I just dont know which way to go.
