Which external SSD is best for expanding PS5 storage?

Hey everyone! I’ve finally hit that dreaded 'Storage Full' notification on my PS5, and it’s becoming a real pain to decide which games to delete every time a new update drops. I’m looking into getting an external SSD to help manage the load and give my console some breathing room.

I primarily want to use it to play my back-catalog of PS4 games directly from the drive, and maybe use it as 'cold storage' for PS5 titles I’m not currently playing but want to keep handy. I’ve been doing some research and looking at options like the Samsung T7 Shield and the WD_Black P40, but I’m a bit confused about the technical specs. Does the PS5 actually benefit from those super-fast 2000MB/s speeds, or is the USB port limited in a way that makes a standard 1050MB/s drive a better value for the money?

My budget is around $100-$130, and I’m really hoping to find a 1TB or 2TB drive that is reliable. I’m a bit worried about overheating during long gaming sessions, so something with decent heat dissipation would be a huge plus.

In my experience, you really don't need to overspend on those crazy high speeds for a PS5 external drive. Basically, dont waste ur cash on 2000MB/s drives because the PS5's USB ports are capped at 10Gbps, so anything over 1050MB/s is just gonna get throttled anyway! Here's what i'd suggest for ur budget:
* Samsung T7 Shield 2TB Portable SSD - This is the 'safe' bet; the rugged case highkey helps keep things cool during long sessions and I've used mine for years without issues.
* Crucial X9 Pro 2TB Portable SSD - Super compact and runs really cool in my experience, plus it usually sits right in that $120-$130 range. I'd definitely go for 2TB if u can swing it because 1TB fills up way faster than u think... i think the 1050MB/s models are the absolute sweet spot for value right now. gl!

I went through this last year. Honestly, it's sooo frustrating seeing that storage full bar every time a patch drops! I realy wanted the fastest thing out there, but my budget was tight so I had to be practical. I ended up choosing the WD_BLACK 2TB P40 Game Drive when it was on sale, and while the RGB is cool, the performance feels basically identical to the slower drives I've tested. I also looked at the Kingston XS1000 2TB External SSD which is a total steal for the price! It handles my PS4 games amazing and doesn't get hot at all during 4-hour sessions. Quick tip: definitely prioritize getting 2TB over a faster 1TB drive... you'll need the space way more than speed the console can't even use tho!!
