Ive been building gaming rigs since the early 2000s so I know my way around an M.2 slot but this PS5 storage stuff is driving me mental. I just got my Pro set up and for some reason the drive I used in my old console is getting sluggish or just flat out failing the speed test on startup.

Im in the UK and looking to drop maybe 150-180 quid on a solid 2TB stick before my leave starts next week because I am done with deleting games to make room. What is actually the best internal SSD for the PS5 and PS5 Pro right now that actually hits those 7000MB/s targets consistently?

Honestly, sounds like your old drive might be thermal throttling or just reaching its endurance limit if it was an earlier gen4 stick. for that budget in the uk right now, i would suggest looking at the Western Digital WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB NVMe with Heatsink. i have used a few of these in both standard ps5s and the pro, and they consistently hit that 7300mb/s mark on the initial system scan. be careful with some of the cheaper brands that claim high speeds but drop off significantly once the slc cache fills up during a big 100gb install. i would also suggest making sure you get the model with the factory heatsink attached. diy heatsinks are okay, but i have seen people buy ones that are slightly too tall, which stops the expansion slot cover from seating properly. if that cover isnt on, the consoles internal airflow wont work as intended, which might be why your old one is acting up. another solid pick is the Samsung 990 Pro 2TB NVMe M.2 with Heatsink. it is technically faster on paper with better random read/write iops, but in a console, you wont really feel that difference compared to the sn850x. just make sure you check the firmware if you go samsung, as early batches had some wear issues that were fixed in updates. might want to consider the western digital just for the peace of mind tbh... you really dont want to be pulling the console apart again in six months.

Its so reliable and the endurance rating is just amazing for heavy gaming. If you want to save a few quid, the Kingston FURY Renegade 2TB with Heatsink is also fantastic and hits those speeds easily. Both run super cool and wont give you those weird startup errors. Definitely worth the investment for a Pro setup!

I swapped to the Crucial T500 2TB NVMe SSD with Heatsink recently and honestly im super satisfied. It hits 7400MB/s and runs much cooler than my old drive did, great value too.
