Hey everyone! I’ve been using my Sony RX100 VII for a few months now, and while the built-in pop-up flash is okay for a quick fill, it’s definitely lacking when I’m trying to shoot indoors or at evening events. I love how portable this camera is, but I really need an external option that allows me to bounce light off the ceiling to avoid those harsh, direct shadows and that 'deer in headlights' look.
My main concern is the size and balance. Since the RX100 is so tiny, I’m worried that a standard-sized speedlite will make the whole setup top-heavy and awkward to hold. I’ve been looking at the Godox TT350S because of its compact frame, but I’ve also heard some people mention the Sony HVL-F20M for its slim profile. I definitely need something with full TTL support so I don't have to fiddle with manual power settings while chasing my kids around at family gatherings.
Does anyone have a go-to external flash that balances well on the RX100 series without ruining the 'pocketable' vibe? I'd love to hear your recommendations, especially if there's a specific model under $150 that offers a good mix of power and portability.
Careful with heavy flashes on that mount! Id compare Sony HVL-F20M Flash (portable but limited) vs Meike MK-320S TTL Speedlite (great bounce/cheap). Both fit your budget perfectly without breaking anything!
Coming back to this, i once slapped a big speedlite on my rx100 and honestly thought the hot shoe was gonna snap off lol. felt super sketchy. Can you clarify basically what kind of ceiling heights are we talking about for bouncing?? i think the Godox TT350S Mini Thinklite TTL Flash for Sony is decent, but the Sony HVL-F20M External Flash is wayyy safer for ur camera's balance. basically dont kill ur mount
Subbing for updates
Ok so I’m going to go against the grain here a bit. Tbh, even the smallest flashes put a lot of leverage on that tiny hot shoe, and I’ve seen way too many people end up with loose mounts or weird electrical glitches after a few months of "casual" use. If you’re worried about reliability—which you totally should be—sticking a flash directly on that frame might not be the best move for the long haul. Here’s a few things to keep in mind regarding the safety of your gear:
- The physical stress on the RX100's top plate can cause internal alignment issues if the flash catches on something.
- Compact hot shoes are notorious for losing connection if they get wiggled too much by the torque of a bouncing flash head.
- It completely changes the center of gravity, making it way easier to drop the whole rig when you're distracted by the kids. So basically, maybe think about going off-camera with a tiny wireless trigger instead? It keeps the camera light and saves the hot shoe from unnecessary wear and tear. I mean, it’s a tiny bit more to manage, but honestly, your camera’s longevity is worth the trade-off!
Saved for later, ty!
