which grip extension is actually worth it for the RX100? Im torn between the official Sony AG-R2 and the SmallRig L-shape one. Im heading to Japan next week and my hands are just way too big for this tiny thing. Budget is around $40. Is the SmallRig too bulky or should I just stick with the basic Sony one??
Building on the earlier suggestion, the extra height is key but unfortunately most grips I tried felt way too clunky. Its hard to find a good middle ground. I really wanted to love the Meike MK-RX100G Hand Grip but the texture was disappointing and felt kinda slippery.
In my experience shooting with the RX100 series for years, the Sony grip is honestly just a band-aid. I've tried many different setups and the Sony AG-R2 Attachment Grip is fine for a bit more friction, but it doesnt actually make the camera feel larger in the hand. Since you're heading to Japan and mentioned having big hands, you should definitely go with the SmallRig L-Shape Grip for Sony RX100 III IV V VI VII 2467. It adds that crucial bit of height at the bottom so your pinky actually has somewhere to rest. It's not too bulky at all, it mostly just makes the camera feel solid instead of like a slippery soap bar. Plus, you get the cold shoe on the bottom for accessories if you ever need them. Its well within your $40 budget. Trust me, your hands will thank you after a long day of walking around Tokyo... definitely worth the extra few bucks over the basic rubber piece.
saw this thread and figured id weigh in on the technical side. If you have larger hands, you really need to look at the vertical clearance and baseplate depth. The SmallRig L-Shape Grip for Sony RX100 III/IV/V/VI/VII 2462 is a solid choice because it adds about 15mm of height, giving your pinky an actual place to rest. Specs to keep in mind:
