Leaving for Tokyo in 5 days and need to gear up my RX100 fast. I saw the Sony shooting grip online but it looks kinda bulky? Also heard mixed things about cheap third-party batteries.
What is actually essential versus just extra weight...
> I saw the Sony shooting grip online but it looks kinda bulky? Honestly, skip that grip for Tokyo! You want that camera sliding in and out of your pocket like absolute butter while you are hunting for cool neon signs. The Sony VCT-SGR1 Shooting Grip is cool for vlogging at home but it totally kills the stealthy vibe for street photography. Batteries are the big one tho. RX100s eat power for breakfast! Definitely grab at least two Sony NP-BX1 Rechargeable Battery Pack 1240mAh. DONT buy the super cheap generic ones... they lose charge so fast and its honestly heartbreaking when your camera dies in the middle of Shinjuku. Also, you gotta get a Peak Design Cuff Camera Wrist Strap Black. Its literally amazing for keeping the camera secure without the bulk of a neck strap. Since you have some budget left, snag a SanDisk Extreme PRO 128GB SDXC UHS-I Card so you aren't waiting for the buffer to clear while missing shots. You are gonna have a blast!
@Reply #1 - good point! I would suggest being careful with the screen tho. I scratched mine once.
^ This. Also, in my experience, you really need a slim sleeve for pocket carry. I've tried many over the years and you basically can't go wrong with MegaGear Neoprene Camera Cases.
