Hey everyone! I’ve been using my Sony RX100 VII for a few months now, and while I absolutely love the image quality and how compact it is, I’m struggling with the ergonomics. The body is just so smooth and slim that it feels like it could slip out of my hand at any moment—especially when I'm trying to shoot one-handed while traveling. I’ve looked into a few options, like the official Sony AG-R2 attachment, but I’ve also seen some more substantial wood grips and L-brackets from brands like SmallRig. My main concern is finding a balance between getting a solid hold and keeping the camera pocket-friendly. I don't want to add so much bulk that I can't slide it into my jacket pocket anymore. Some of the stick-on grips look a bit flimsy, while the screw-in ones seem more secure but might block the battery door. Has anyone here tried different grips for their RX100? I’m curious if you prefer the simple rubberized stick-on ones or if it’s worth upgrading to a full metal or wood grip for that extra stability. Which specific brand or model would you recommend if I want to keep things as compact as possible without sacrificing a secure hold?

honestly, i'd just get the JJC HG-RX100 Metal Hand Grip. it's cheap, super solid, and way more secure than stickers while staying pretty pocketable... definitely a budget win!! gl!

In my experience, you should compare the Lensmate RX100 VII Folding Thumb Grip versus a sleek stick-on like the Richard Franiec Sony RX100 Custom Grip. The thumb grip gives ur hand a realy solid anchor without adding front bulk, while the Franiec grip is way more ergonomic than cheap rubber ones. Honestly, I'd go with the thumb grip... it's a total game changer for one-handed shooting while keeping it pocketable! gl

In my experience, the Sony AG-R2 Attachment Grip for $15 is best. It's way more pocketable than the SmallRig L-Bracket for Sony RX100 VII... that one is secure but adds too much bulk and cost tbh

I totally agree with the point about finding a solid anchor point because the ergonomics on these units are technically a bit of a mess. If you look at the market research on these compacts, the shift from basic rubber to CNC-machined alloys has really changed how we handle small sensors. Basically, you want a brand that understands the precision needed for the RX100 chassis. In my experience, the manufacturing tolerances on the official accessories are actually a bit loose compared to some of the high-end third-party manufacturers. You should really look at the stuff coming out from Meike or even Neewer lately. You cant go wrong with their gear because they use high-grade aluminum that offers way better tactile feedback and durability than the standard stick-on stuff. When you are comparing brands, look for:

  • High-grade aluminum alloys
  • Integrated Arca-Swiss plate designs
  • Minimalist form factors that dont block the battery door Just stick with a reputable third-party brand that specializes in camera rigs. They usually have much better weight-to-volume ratios which helps with that pocketability you are worried about. It makes a HUGE difference in one-handed stability.

Saw this earlier but just getting a chance to reply... honestly I have the exact same problem with my VII. It is way too slippery for comfort. I was so worried about dropping mine that I almost stopped carrying it. I ended up going the DIY route to keep the dimensions down since I hate the bulk of most cages. TL;DR: Use high-friction adhesive materials for zero-bulk grip. Quick tips:

  • Clean the surface with 70% isopropyl alcohol first so the adhesive actually bonds properly to the metal.
  • Use a precision blade to cut the tape so it doesnt overlap the lens ring. I used a bit of CatTongue Grips Gription Tape and it works well for me. I am super satisfied with the feel because it adds basically zero thickness. If you want something that looks more factory, I have seen people swear by the Alphagurd Sony RX100 VII Skin kits. They add just enough texture to the magnesium alloy to stop that sliding feeling without ruining the lines of the camera... basically solves the friction coefficient issue without the bulk of a screw-in grip. It makes the one-handed shooting feel way more secure tho.
