So I finally caved and bought a used RX100 VII for my Japan trip in two weeks and man this thing is like a bar of soap. I'm terrified I'm gonna drop it on the sidewalk in Shinjuku or something. I've been looking at a couple options to make it easier to hold because my hands are way too big for this tiny body.
First there is the official Sony AG-R2 attachment which is cheap like 15 bucks but it just looks like a tiny piece of plastic that sticks on with tape? Does that even hold up over time or does the adhesive get gross after it gets hot?
Then I saw the SmallRig wooden grip (LCS2438) which looks way nicer and probably fits my hands better. Its more expensive though around 45 dollars and I'm on a bit of a budget after paying for flights and everything. I also saw some people talking about the Neewer cage but that seems like overkill for just walking around and taking street photos.
Im mainly worried about the weight vs the extra grip. Does the SmallRig make it too bulky for a jacket pocket? I really want something that feels secure but doesnt turn the camera into a brick. Torn between the cheap stick-on and the wood one...
@Reply #2 - good point but i disagree. Those stick-on grips feel cheap and usually peel in humidity. In my experience, the MegaGear Genuine Leather Half Case for Sony RX100 VII is a way better choice. It adds just enough thickness for big hands to actually hold without making it a brick in your pocket. Tbh, it makes the camera feel way more secure for street photography than a tiny piece of plastic.
Saw this earlier and had to jump in because I have been through this exact dilemma! Honestly, you should just grab the Sony AG-R2 Attachment Grip and call it a day. Its surprisingly amazing for such a cheap piece of rubber and totally transforms the feel of the camera.
That soap bar feeling is a real hazard and you should definitely be careful in crowded spots. To help figure out the best grip for your Sony RX100 VII, are you planning on using a wrist strap as well? Also, how tight are the pockets youre planning to use for carrying the camera?
