I recently picked up an RX100 for an upcoming trip, and while I love how pocketable it is, I’m realizing it might need a few add-ons to really shine on the road. It feels a bit slippery to hold, so I’m already looking at the official Sony attachment grip, but I’m worried about battery life since these NP-BX1s don't seem to last very long during a full day of shooting. I’m also curious if anyone uses a specific compact case or a wrist strap that doesn't add too much bulk. Are there any other essential accessories, like glass screen protectors or filter adapters, that you’d recommend for a travel setup? What are your top 'must-have' items for this camera?
Yo, I've used these for years and they're AMAZING! For your situation, I suggest: 1. Sony AG-R2 Attachment Grip: Better than generic ones because it fits PERFECTLY.
2. Sony NP-BX1 Rechargeable Battery Pack vs Wasabi Power Battery (2-Pack) for Sony NP-BX1: Official lasts longer but Wasabi is WAY cheaper for travel spares.
3. Sony VFA-49R1 Filter Adapter: Highkey essential for ND filters. Seriously, get the grip first! lol 👍
Quick question - are you using one of the newer models like the VII or the older ones? The lens zoom and EVF on the newer ones literally eat the Sony NP-BX1 Rechargeable Battery Pack for breakfast, so that's gonna affect how many spares you really need for a full day. Before I give my full list, honestly, I've had some bad experiences with 'premium' accessories not being worth the high markup. For example: * Screen: Skip the official Sony one and get the ULBTER RX100 VII VI V Tempered Glass Screen Protector. It's basically the same specs but costs way less for a 3-pack.
* Strap: I tried a cheap wrist loop and it felt flimsy... eventually went with the Peak Design Cuff Camera Wrist Strap. It's great cuz you can pop it off instantly when you want it back in your pocket.
* Protection: If you want cheap and light, the MegaGear Ultra Light Neoprene Camera Case is alright, tho it's a bit tight on the newer models. But yeah, let me know which version you have! tbh the battery life is the biggest letdown of the whole series...
Just catching up on this thread. Honestly, I had some issues with the standard grip setup everyone suggests. I bought that official Sony one before a trip to Thailand and the adhesive basically melted in the humidity... super annoying. I ended up switching to a SmallRig Cage for Sony RX100 VII and VI 2225 which sounds overkill for a compact but it actually makes the camera feel solid and adds a cold shoe for a mic if you ever need it. Also, nobody mentioned how much of a pain it is to charge these batteries one by one via the camera port. I got so tired of waiting that I picked up a Nitecore USN1 Dual Slot USB Charger. It lets you charge two at once from a power bank while the camera is in your pocket, which is a total lifesaver when youre out all day. One more thing, if you're shooting 4K or burst mode, dont skimp on the card. I had a generic one fail on me and lost a days worth of street shots. Now I stick with the SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I Card and havent had a single write error since. Just my two cents tho.
Facts.
.
In my experience, everyone focuses on the external bits but forgets the internal bottleneck. You really need to grab a SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO UHS-I SDXC because the write speeds actually matter if youre doing bursts or 4K on the newer models. Most people buy the slowest thing they find at the airport and then wonder why the buffer hangs for ten seconds while they miss the next shot. I actually DIY my own grips now using GT-5000 Grip Tape for Guns and Gear. The adhesive on the official Sony one is garbage in high humidity like I found out the hard way. I spent like three hours last weekend in my workshop retrofitting my old analog bodies with some custom textured rubber I found at a marine supply store. Honestly, my garage is just full of half-finished camera projects and old soldering irons at this point. My wife thinks im crazy for taking a Dremel to a $1000 camera but the ergonomics are finally perfect. Anyway, just something to think about if you want a better hold without the bulk, but yeah.
