So I just dropped way too much money on a Sony RX100 VII for my Japan trip next month and now Im honestly spiraling about accessories. My logic was to keep it pocketable but everyone online says the grip is trash so I was looking at the SmallRig cage or the Sony AG-R2 grip... but like if I put a cage on it isnt it just a big camera now?? I also read about those MagFilter adapter things for ND filters since this model doesnt have the built-in ND filter anymore which is so annoying for a $1200 camera. I have about $200 left to spend and I just dont want to buy stuff that makes it bulky or ruins the point of a point-and-shoot. What are the actual essentials that dont turn it into a brick?

In my experience, cages ruin ergonomics. Ive tried many setups and these are the only essentials:

Quick reply while I have a sec. Are you planning on shooting a lot of video or mostly just stills? Id suggest being careful about blowing your whole budget on filters because the batteries on these things are tiny. You might want to consider a Wasabi Power Battery 2-Pack for Sony NP-BX1 to save some cash. Make sure to get a dedicated charger too so you arent tethered to a wall.

I'm totally with Tumerd on the grip—dont even think about the cage if you're hitting Japan. I've tried many travel setups over the years and keeping it lean is the only way to survive those 20k-step days in Tokyo. Since you've got about $200 left, I'd look at how you're carrying it. In my experience, these are the two main ways to go:

  • Sony LCJ-RXK Jacket Case: The pro choice. It fits like a glove and lets you access the ports easily. It feels solid but does make the camera a bit more 'grandpa-chic' looking.
  • MegaGear Ultra Light Neoprene Case: The minimalist choice. It's basically a padded sock. It’s dirt cheap and adds zero weight, but offers zero drop protection... mostly just for scratches while it’s in your bag. If you want my advice, get the MegaGear and spend the rest of that cash on a SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SDXC UHS-I. You dont want a slow card killing your burst rate when a cool car drives by in Shibuya. And honestly, a Sony PCK-LG1 Screen Protector is non-negotiable since that glass is surprisingly thin. Let me know if you need help with settings for the trip!

I once packed a full cage for a week in Osaka and hated every second of it. Are you shooting video or just stills while you walk?
