I just treated myself to a Sony RX1R II, and while I love the compact design, I’m pretty nervous about scratching it up during daily carry. I’m looking for a high-quality leather half-case that complements the camera's classic aesthetic without adding too much bulk. I’ve been looking at options from brands like Gariz and Lim’s, but I’m specifically interested in cases that feature a built-in flap for easy battery and SD card access so I don't have to unscrew the whole thing. Does anyone have hands-on experience with these, or perhaps a recommendation for a bespoke maker? Specifically, how do they affect the grip and overall handling?
Honestly, finish protection is key for resale, so basically grab the TP Original Leather Camera Half Case for Sony RX1R II. It’s only $50, has the flap, and adds some essential grip safety too.
Ok so, I'd actually suggest a different approach - respectfully, I'd consider another option before just grabbing the cheapest stuff recommended earlier. Ngl, I'm a bit of a cautious user when it comes to gear safety. I'm still kinda new to the RX1 system myself, but I've tried many cases on my other mirrorless setups over the years and found that budget options sometimes have loose fits that let grit rub against the finish. Not exactly what you want for protection! If youre looking for that perfect balance of quality and utility, here's my take: - Lim's Design Italian Leather Half Case for Sony RX1R II: This is basically the gold standard imo. It has the specific flap you want for the battery/SD card and a solid aluminum base. It adds a bit of height which ACTUALLY makes the grip way more comfortable for daily shooting. The fit is literal perfection.
- Kaza Deluxe Leather Half Case for Sony RX1R II: If you want a "bespoke" vintage vibe without a crazy price tag, these are great. The leather is softer than the Lim's, though it adds a tiny bit more bulk. I guess it depends on if you want a modern or classic look? In my experience, the Lim's is better for handling because of that metal base. It makes the camera feel more substantial, which helps steady your shots. Have you checked if the extra weight bothers you? gl!
I've been doing a lot of market research on this lately since I'm also a beginner with the RX1 series and I'm terrified of scratching mine too lol. From what I can tell, the big difference between the mass-market brands and the bespoke makers is basically how they handle the grip geometry and the baseplate material. I have a couple questions before you decide:
Ive tried many cases over the years, but honestly, in my experience, the mass-produced ones never quite fit right. A few years back I got so fed up with the prices that I actually bought a side of vegetable-tanned leather to try and sew my own. It was a total disaster lol. I ended up spending way more on specialized stitching chisels and waxed thread than a premium case wouldve cost. Then I got distracted and used the leftover leather to fix this old belt my dad gave me. It was one of those thick work belts from the 70s, back when they actually made stuff to last. My workbench is still covered in tiny leather scraps and I never even finished the camera sleeve... anyway lol sorry kinda went off topic there.
Can confirm
Big if true
Ok adding this to my list of things to try. Thanks for the tip!
