Are there any recommended travel cases for Sony compact cameras?

Hey everyone! I just recently picked up a Sony RX100 VII for my upcoming trip to Europe, and I’m absolutely loving how powerful this little thing is for its size. However, I’m a bit paranoid about just tossing it into my daily backpack without some proper protection. I’ve been scouring the web for a solid travel case, but it's surprisingly hard to find that 'perfect' fit.

I’m looking for something that doesn't add too much bulk—after all, the whole point of a compact camera is to keep things light! Ideally, I’d love something with a semi-hard shell to protect against accidental bumps in a crowded bag, but still slim enough to slide into a jacket pocket if I’m out walking. It would also be a huge plus if there’s a small internal divider or a mesh pocket for a spare NP-BX1 battery and an extra SD card, since those are so easy to misplace while traveling.

Has anyone found a specific brand or model that fits the Sony RX100 or ZV-1 series perfectly? I’m currently torn between getting a rugged molded hardshell or one of those vintage-style leather cases. Do you have any go-to recommendations that successfully balance protection with portability for a traveler on the move?

sooo i've used sony compacts for years... i think these budget ones are actually decent options for ur trip: 1. Aproca Hard Travel Storage Case for Sony RX100 VII — around $14. it's a slim hardshell with the mesh pocket.
2. Lowepro Tahoe CS 20 Case — usually $15, maybe a bit too padded? honestly i'd go with the Aproca. it fits the pocket better i guess. gl!

Curious about one thing: do you have a grip or thumb rest attached? That really changes the fit!! honestly, i'm super satisfied with the MegaGear Ultra Light Neoprene Camera Case for $18—it’s way more pocketable than the Aproca. But if you want a hard shell with a pocket, the USA Gear Hard Shell Camera Case is around $20 and very rugged. basically its pocketability vs storage... which do you prefer?? gl!

As someone whos tested basically every compact carrier since the original RX100 launch, you really have to look at the manufacturing tolerances and material quality beyond just the generic shells. High-end brands like Manfrotto and Think Tank design specifically for impact dispersion, which is huge if youre actually traveling and hitting crowds.

  • Think Tank Photo Mirrorless Mover 5
  • This is the industry standard for durability. Its a bit more premium with ballistic nylon and YKK zippers, plus it has a dedicated front pocket for that NP-BX1 battery.
  • Manfrotto Piccolo-3
  • Much slimmer and more pocket-friendly. Its technically a pouch but uses a high-density foam that offers way better shock protection than those cheap generic EVA shells. Tbh if youre sticking with the RX100 series long-term, invest in something with high-grade zippers. Cheap ones always jam when you get any grit in them during travel, so the extra ten dollars is realllly worth the peace of mind.

For your situation, I've honestly had such a headache finding the right fit because the tolerances on these compacts are so tight. ngl, I spent way too much on a fancy leather 'ever-ready' case that was basically useless. It added like 30% more bulk and didn't even have room for a spare battery. Total waste of money imo. In my experience, ur better off looking for a generic semi-rigid EVA shell. My current setup is just a plain, unbranded molded case I found for cheap. It’s got a decent internal mesh that holds my spare battery perfectly without scratching the screen. Just be careful with the zipper quality—I had one fail on me during a trip, which was super annoying. You don't need to spend $50 for solid protection; usually, the $15 generic ones are actually more functional than the high-end vintage styles. gl!
