so i just got my sony fx30 and im like super excited to start filming but honestly looking at all these cages and handles is making my head spin. i feel like i dont even know what i actually need or if im just buying stuff to look cool. sorry if this is a really basic question i just dont want to waste money since my budget is only like 250 bucks for the whole rig setup and i spent most of my savings on the camera body itself. my logic was that i need a top handle for those low shots because im filming my sisters wedding in austin this october and i want it to look professional but then i see these side handles too and im like wait do i need both?? i looked at the smallrig one because it seemed cheap but then i saw tilta and someone mentioned nato rails and i have literally no idea what a nato rail even is or if it fits on the fx30. i was thinking about just getting the basic cage but then how do i attach the mic? or the monitor? it feels like a big puzzle and im missing all the pieces. does anyone have a setup that just works without being too heavy because i have tiny hands lol. i just want something sturdy that wont fall apart while im running around at the wedding...

tbh i saw this earlier and wanted to chime in because i have been super satisfied with a slightly different approach. i totally get the nerves about gear falling apart... weddings are chaotic and the last thing you want is a loose handle mid-vow. personally, im gonna politely disagree with the nato rail suggestions for a first-timer with small hands. nato is basically just a quick-release rail system that lets you slide handles on and off fast, but if the clamp isnt perfect or gets bumped, it can slide. since youre worried about reliability and safety, i would go with something that bolts down permanently. i use the SmallRig Black Mamba Cage for Sony FX30 FX3 3866 and honestly it is perfect. it wraps around the grip so it doesnt feel like youre holding a giant metal box, which is huge if your hands are on the smaller side. it feels way more secure than the generic square cages. for the handle, check out the SmallRig Top Handle with Cold Shoe 1638. its a classic for a reason. it screws directly into the top of the cage with two 1/4 inch screws so it wont wiggle or slide no matter how much you run around. to mount your monitor, just grab a SmallRig Swivel and Tilt Monitor Mount with Cold Shoe BSE2346. it slides right onto the cold shoe at the front of that handle. this whole setup is way under your 250 budget and leaves you money for extra batteries or a fast sd card, which youll definitely need for a texas wedding in october lol. it just works, no fussing with rails or extra bits.

Re: "The FX30 is such a beast! I remember..." - unfortunately i had issues with that specific nato handle before because it felt super loose during a shoot. For someone with smaller hands, these might be better:

The FX30 is such a beast! I remember my first wedding shoot, I totally panicked about my rig too. Honestly, just grab the SmallRig Cage for Sony FX30 / FX3 4183 because it fits like a glove. I love using the SmallRig NATO Top Handle 2439 for those low angles. NATO rails are basically just quick-release sliders... seriously, they make life so much easier! It wont break your budget and feels light.
