Hey everyone! I recently picked up a Sony FX30 and an a6700 for a two-camera setup. I am loving the image quality, but those tiny flip-out screens are making it really hard to nail focus, especially when shooting outdoors in bright sunlight.

I am looking for a monitor that handles custom LUTs well and has a high nit count so I can see clearly without a sun hood. Weight is a big factor too since I frequently use the a6700 on a small gimbal.

I am looking at:

  • Atomos Shinobi
  • PortKeys PT6
  • FeelWorld LUT5

What external monitor do you recommend for these specific Sony bodies to get the best balance of brightness and features?

Agreed on the heat. For those Sony bodies, the FeelWorld LUT5 5.5 Inch 3000nit is a steal and handles custom LUTs perfectly while staying super bright outdoors.

Adding my two cents, if you want a budget beast that handles the sun, look at the Desview R6 UHB 5.5 Inch 2800nit. Its super bright and light enough for that a6700 gimbal. Honestly, check out reviews on YouTube to see the color accuracy first. Pro tip: buy some third-party NP-F batteries to save cash, you dont need the name brand ones for these monitors.

I have been shooting with Sony bodies for years, but honestly, picking the perfect monitor still feels like a gamble sometimes because the tech moves so fast. I think I heard somewhere that the newer high-nit panels can get pretty hot, which might be a concern if you're out in the sun all day with that FX30. Not sure but I recall a buddy saying that some of the lighter options actually have better UI for loading custom LUTs via SD cards, which is way more convenient than faffing with weird internal menus. IIRC, some of these smaller displays can draw a lot of power too, so you might need to carry extra batteries, which kinda defeats the purpose of a light gimbal setup. My advice would be to look for something with at least 2000 nits. Anything less and you will still be squinting in midday sun. Just my thoughts, tho!

Saw this earlier and had to jump in... ^ This. Also, while I know people love the super cheap high-nit options, I've gotta say I'm wary of the reliability on some of those brands. I've seen too many of them glitch out or get weird color shifts when they get hot under the sun! If you're using an FX30 for real work, you want something that wont quit on you. Honestly, check out the Shimbol Memory I 5.5 Inch 2000nit. Its an amazing budget beast and feels way more solid than the usual cheap suspects. It even records MP4 proxies to an SD card which is fantastic for such a low price! Its super bright for outdoor shooting too so you dont need to mess with a sun hood. If you can squeeze a few more bucks out of your budget, the PortKeys LH5P II 5.5 Inch 2200nit is absolutely fantastic. The build quality is amazing and being able to control your Sony settings via the touch screen is a total game changer for gimbal work with the a6700. Definitely worth it for the reliability and features alone tho!
