I’ve recently upgraded my setup to include both the Sony FX30 for my main video projects and the a6400 as a reliable B-cam for travel and quick b-roll. While the video quality is fantastic, I’m really struggling to get the audio where I want it to be. The built-in mics just aren’t cutting it for the professional feel I’m going for, especially when filming outdoors or in slightly echoey rooms.
Since the FX30 has that great XLR top handle and the a6400 is much more compact with just the 3.5mm jack, I’m looking for recommendations that might work well across both systems. I’ve been looking at the Sony ECM-B10 because of the digital interface, but I’m also considering a versatile shotgun mic like the Rode VideoMic NTG that I can easily swap between the two. My budget is around $300–$500, and I mostly do a mix of documentary-style interviews and run-and-gun vlogging. I really need something that can handle wind well and provides a clean signal without too much hiss.
Has anyone here used a specific setup that bridges the gap between these two cameras effectively? If you had to pick one 'do-it-all' mic for this Sony duo, which one would you go with and why?
> I started with the Sony ECM-B10 cuz the digital interface sounds great on paper, but unfortunately, I had issues with the build quality Seconding the recommendation above. I’ve been shooting for a decade and, unfortunately, those plastic-heavy Sony digital mics like the Sony ECM-B10 just feel way too flimsy for real field work. I had issues with mounting and the wind noise was honestly a nightmare... not as good as expected at all. Quick tip: Grab the Sennheiser+MKE+600+Shotgun+Microphone&linkCode=osi&tag=5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Sennheiser MKE 600 Shotgun Microphone. It’s the ultimate "bridge" mic because it runs on an internal battery for your a6400’s 3.5mm jack but delivers pro-grade XLR signal for the FX30 handle. It’s built like a tank and stays well within ur budget. Basically, skip the vlogging toys and get a real shotgun; just make sure to pair it with a Rycote Super-Softie 12cm MKE 600 for outdoors, right? The clean signal is SO much better. Cheers!
I went through this last year. Honestly, I started with the Sony ECM-B10 cuz the digital interface sounds great on paper, but unfortunately, I had issues with the build quality—it felt kinda flimsy for doc-style work and the wind noise was lowkey terrible even with the muff on. 1. I ended up switching to the Rode VideoMic NTG. It’s roughly $250 and it's been way more reliable for my run-and-gun stuff.
2. To bridge the gap, I use the Rode VXLR Pro Transformer to plug the NTG into the FX30’s XLR handle. This actually gives a cleaner signal than the 3.5mm jack, plus it handles the voltage conversion so you dont have issues with phantom power.
3. On the a6400, the NTG is a beast cuz it has its own internal battery and gain knob. I found that if you turn the camera gain down to 1 and let the mic do the heavy lifting, the hiss is basically gone... which is huge on those older Sony preamps right? Anyway, just my experience... the 'all-in-one' Sony mics just arent as good as expected for the price. gl!
