Which prime lens is best for street photography on Sony a6400?

I just picked up an a6400 and want to try street photography. I'm looking for something compact and sharp, but I'm torn between a 24mm or 35mm focal length for that APS-C crop. Since I often shoot at night, a fast aperture is a must. Which prime offers the best balance of size and autofocus speed for this setup?

In my experience, choosing between these two depends on how much of the environment you wanna include. I've been shooting street with the a6400 for a while and honestly, I get the struggle! For your situation, I would suggest looking at the Sigma 23mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Sony E. I actually own this one and it's basically glued to my camera. Since it's about a 35mm equivalent on the crop sensor, it's perfect for capturing the scene without feeling too crowded. That f/1.4 aperture is literally a game changer for night shots—I've gotten some reallyyy clean low-light stuff with it.

If you want something even smaller, the Sony E 35mm f/1.8 OSS is a solid choice too. It's super light and the autofocus is snappy, tho the 50mm equivalent field of view can feel kinda tight in narrow alleys. iirc, the Sigma is sharper but the Sony is tiny. Personally, I'm super happy with the Sigma's rendering and speed. Good luck!! cheers

This^ Also, be careful with weather sealing...
* I would suggest Sony E 24mm f/1.8 ZA
Its reliably built and highkey sharp for night street, right?

I think picking the right lens for your a6400 really depends on whether you want a polished professional experience or something more DIY. For street stuff, 24mm is usually the way to go if you wanna be right in the middle of things, but 35mm is sort of the classic standard for a reason. I have a couple clarifying questions before giving a final recommendation:

  • What is your total budget for this lens?
  • Are you looking for a modern lens with full professional support, or are you open to a more DIY approach like buying used or adapting older glass to save money? Honestly, you can save so much if you handle the quality control yourself and buy used gear. It takes a bit more effort to test things out, but for street photography, having a setup you arent afraid to get a little dirty is basically a huge plus. Just gotta decide if you want that out-of-the-box performance or if you are down to do some legwork.

This^ Also, for a budget-friendly pick, the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary is technical perfection for the price. Fast AF and f/1.4 is basically a cheat code for night street shots imo.
