so i just got the sony a6700 and honestly i have no idea what i am doing lol. i bought the body because the guy at the store said it was the best for travel but now i realize i actually need a lens to take pictures and my trip to Japan is in like ten days so i am kinda panicking. I really just want one lens that can stay on the camera the whole time because i dont want to be swapping things out in a crowded street and getting dust inside the camera or losing a piece. everyone keeps talking about mm numbers and f stops and its honestly making my head spin i just dont get it yet. I want something that can take a picture of my food up close but also maybe a cool temple that is further away?
is there like one lens that everyone just buys for this? i keep seeing names like tamron and sigma but i dont know if they even fit on a sony camera. sorry if this is a dumb question i am just super overwhelmed right now...
Honestly dont stress too much, we all started somewhere and Japan is basically the best place on earth to test a new camera. In my experience, if you want just one lens that stays on the body and handles everything from ramen bowls to Kyoto temples, you should grab the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary. I've tried many different setups for travel over the years and this one is a winner because it is incredibly tiny and light, which matters when youre walking 15 miles a day like you mentioned. The f/2.8 part is really important for those Japan city lights at night because it lets in way more light than the basic kit lenses. It also lets you get really close to your food for those macro-style shots. It fits perfectly on your a6700 without any adapters. You could also look at the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD but honestly it is much bigger and heavier. Stick with the Sigma, it is well within your budget and basically built for exactly what you need.
I once lugged a massive kit through Osaka and it basically ruined my back. After trying many setups over the years, check these out:
