Which zoom lens should I really be looking at for an all-in-one setup on my new a6700? Im currently stuck between the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 and the Tamron 17-70mm f2.8 and honestly its making my head spin a little bit. I also looked at the Sony 16-55mm G but that price tag is kinda hard to swallow even used so its probably out for now.

Im heading to Tokyo and Osaka in about three weeks for a big solo trip so I need something versatile for street shots and food pics but I dont want to be swapping lenses constantly in the middle of a crowded train station or while hiking around Kyoto. The Sigma is so tiny and light which sounds perfect for walking 20k steps a day but I worry about the lack of stabilization since I do a bit of handheld video too even with the a6700s ibis. Then there is the Tamron which has the extra reach and the VC stabilization but man it looks huge on the compact a6000 series bodies and I dont want to stand out too much as a tourist. My budget is capped at around $800-900 because I already spent a lot on the body and flights.

Is the extra 20mm on the Tamron really worth the extra weight and size for a travel lens or should I just stick to the compact Sigma and maybe crop in if I need to? Or is there something else I havent even considered yet...

Honestly, I went through this exact dilemma before my last trip to Japan. I ended up grabbing the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary and I've been so happy with that choice. Walking around Shinjuku and climbing stairs in Kyoto, you really start to feel every extra gram in your bag. The size is basically a cheat code for street shots because nobody even notices you have a real camera. I was worried about the lack of stabilization for handheld video, but the IBIS on the Sony a6700 Mirrorless Camera works well enough that I had no complaints. The Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD is amazing glass but its just so chunky. Cropping in usually worked fine if I needed more reach and things stayed sharp. Tbh, the portability made the trip way more fun...

Agreed on the video needs. Consider Sony E 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS for travel.

  • 325g total weight
  • Internal OSS stabilization
  • 27-202mm equivalent range Solid value for Japan street shots.

Are you vlogging tho? Like someone mentioned, stabilization helps, and the Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS is amazing for video because:

  • Internal zoom balance
  • Constant f4
