So I finally pulled the trigger on the a6700 after years of rocking my trusty a6000 and man the sensor is great but my old glass is just not keeping up anymore. I mostly do street and travel stuff and I’m heading to Kyoto for three weeks next month so I really need to figure this out fast. I thought my old 16-50mm kit would be fine for a light setup but it looks soft as hell on the new 26MP sensor and the autofocus feels weirdly sluggish compared to what this body can actually do. Its honestly driving me crazy because I spent all this money on the body and now I feel like I'm wasting it.
I looked at the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 cuz its tiny but I’m worried about missing the wide end and the lack of stabilization even though the a6700 has IBIS... then theres the Tamron 17-70mm which everyone raves about but its huge and might be too heavy for a whole day of walking around temples. The Sony 16-55mm G is tempting but that price tag is steep and I dont even know if the image quality jump is worth double the price of the Sigma for my needs. My budget is roughly $900 give or take. What is actually the best all-around zoom lens for the a6700 that balances size and sharpness without being a total brick?
Get the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary immediately! At only 290g with a 12.1cm minimum focus distance, its incredibly versatile for Kyoto. The MTF charts on this thing are stellar even at the corners on a 26MP sensor. IBIS on your a6700 totally negates the lack of lens OSS, honestly. Its the ultimate travel setup without breaking your back or the bank!
Are you shooting video? Be careful with low light in Kyoto. I once used a used Sony E 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS to save cash, even if 18mm is kinda tight.
