Hey everyone! I recently upgraded to the Sony a6700, and while I’m blown away by the autofocus and video features, I’m still rocking the basic kit lens. I really want to invest in a high-quality "all-around" zoom that can stay on the camera most of the time. I mainly shoot a mix of travel photography, street scenes, and the occasional family video, so I need something versatile.
I’ve been doing some research and I’m torn between a few options. The Sony 16-55mm f/2.8 G looks amazing for sharpness, but it’s quite an investment and lacks optical stabilization. I know the a6700 has IBIS, but is that enough? I’m also considering the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 for that extra reach and VC, though I'm slightly worried about the size and weight for hiking. Then there’s the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8, which is so compact, but I wonder if I’ll regret losing that 1mm or 2mm on the wide end for landscapes.
I’m looking for a balance of image quality, weight, and price. For those of you using the a6700 as your primary rig, which zoom lens do you find yourself reaching for most often for everyday shooting?
In my experience, here's how i see it: • Sony E 16-55mm f/2.8 G: AMAZING sharpness but basically double the price...
• Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD: Great reach, but way too bulky for hiking tbh.
• Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary: My fav! Kinda misses 16mm but it’s literally pocket-sized. idk but i think the Sigma is the best balance for travel and price. gl!
hey! just saw this. sooo i’ve been shooting Sony for years and went through this exact struggle! i wanted better value for my a6700. - Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary: AMAZING price and tiny!
- Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD: fantastic reach but huge. honestly i went with the Sigma cuz its so light. i think i learned that for travel, weight matters way more than that extra 1mm! gl!
Commenting to find later
Any updates on this?
ngl i just went through this whole thing when i got my a6700 and honestly i am so glad i stopped overthinking it!! i used to be obsessed with having the most expensive glass but if the rig is too heavy for a hike it just stays in my closet. i even tried diy-ing some extra grips for my old heavy setup but it was a total mess. i eventually just started using Sigma glass for all my travel stuff and it made everything so much easier:
