My trip to Tokyo is in three days and I just got this Sony a6400 but the lens it came with makes my face look huge and I cant see the background at all. Im totally lost with all these numbers and I have zero idea what to buy. Whats the best lens that looks wide? sorry if this is a dumb question...
Tokyo is gonna be wild but yeah, three days is a real crunch time to get this sorted. I've been using the a6000 series for years and honestly, the kit lens is such a letdown for vlogging. It makes everything feel claustrophobic and you miss half the cool stuff happening behind you. I actually wasted a lot of money on the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary early on. People rave about it online but I was pretty disappointed with how heavy it is for travel. It's a total chunky brick and my arm would get so tired holding it out on a tripod. Plus, 16mm is still a bit tight on a crop sensor like yours... you dont get enough of the background in the shot when your arm is extended. Here are the ones I actually suggest looking at instead:
Man, Tokyo is gonna be incredible! I remember my first trip there with a tight lens and I basically just filmed my own nose the whole time... super annoying. You definitely need something wider. My absolute favorite right now is the Sony E 11mm f/1.8. It is crazy wide, super sharp, and honestly weighs almost nothing. Walking around Shinjuku for ten hours was a breeze with this setup since it doesnt weigh you down. If you want something for those gorgeous night shots in Golden Gai, the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary is a beast. The background blur is insane! But be warned, it is much bigger and heavier than the Sony. For vlogging, the Tamron 11-20mm f/2.8 Di III-A RXD is great when you need to zoom, but its a bit pricier. Seriously tho, just grab that 11mm and youll have the best time. Enjoy the sushi!
