so i finally pulled the trigger on the a6700 and im super stoked to get shooting but im stuck on the lens choice. im going on a big trip to japan in like three weeks and i really want just one lens to stay on the camera the whole time so i dont have to keep swapping stuff in the middle of a crowded street in shibuya.

i read that the sigma 18-50mm f2.8 is like the gold standard for being tiny and sharp and my logic was that since the a6700 is pretty small it would be a perfect match but then i saw some people saying the tamron 17-70mm is better because it has stabilization and more reach. but the tamron looks massive?? i dont want to be lugging a huge brick around all day while im trying to eat ramen and take photos.

then there is the sony 18-135mm which has way more range but i think it might be too slow for night shots or getting that blurry background feel? i have about 800 bucks left in my budget after buying the body so i can afford most of these but i just cant decide if the extra zoom is worth losing that f2.8 constant aperture. if im doing mostly street stuff and some food closeups which one would you guys actually grab...

Re: "I'm super satisfied with the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8..."

  • I totally get why people love that little guy because it is tiny, but honestly, after doing a massive trip through Kyoto and Osaka last year, I am gonna go against the grain a bit! I was so worried about missing a shot because I couldn't zoom in enough across a busy street or a temple garden... I ended up taking the Sony E 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS and it was literally a lifesaver. Yeah, people say it is slow but the a6700 has such amazing high ISO performance that it really didnt matter for most shots. Having that extra reach meant I could snap photos of cool roof details or people way down an alley without moving an inch. Heres my breakdown from my own experience:
  • Sony E 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS: Super reliable and the OSS stabilization works like a charm. Its way lighter than you would think and just feels safe on the camera.
  • Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD: This thing is a beast! The image quality is fantastic but it is definitely a brick. I really worried about the weight on my neck after 10 hours of walking every day. If you are doing food shots, the 18-135 focuses surprisingly close anyway. Plus, you will have like 300 bucks leftover for all the sushi and ghibli merch! Seriously, dont sleep on the extra zoom range, it makes travel way less stressful when you arent constantly wishing you could get closer to the action. Japan is incredible, you are gonna have a blast!

I'm super satisfied with the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 DC DN Contemporary for travel because:

  • It's incredibly pocketable.
  • f2.8 is clutch for low light. No complaints, it's basically the perfect zoom for Japan.
