Just catching up on this thread. Honestly, it is so frustrating how Sony charges an absolute fortune for these grips. We already spent thousands on the bodies, and they still want another $400 just so our hands dont cramp up? It drives me nuts. But after two years with my a1, I ended up going a route that I'm super satisfied with. Zero complaints so far:

Look for a used Sony VG-C4EM Vertical Grip on MPB or KEH. I grabbed mine for around $180 and the weather sealing is perfect.

If you just need ergonomics for the a9 III and can skip the extra battery, get the SmallRig L-Bracket for Sony Alpha 9 III. It adds that extra pinky rest for cheap.

Clean the grip contacts with isopropyl alcohol every few months to stop those random disconnect issues.

So Ive been a loyal CamelCamelCamel user for what feels like a decade now. It’s always been my go-to for tracking random tech gear for my home setup here in Seattle, but honestly Im starting to hit some walls with it that I didnt notice before. Im planning this big photography trip to Japan in late November and I really need to snag a Sony A7IV and maybe a 24-70mm lens before I go. Since Im looking at spending nearly $3,000 total, every percentage point counts and I dont want to miss the actual bottom of the curve.

The problem is Camel feels a bit laggy lately. I'll get an email alert saying a lens dropped $200 but when I open the link literally three minutes later, the price is back to MSRP. Its super frustrating. Ive heard people swear by Keepa because it tracks way more data points like the Buy Box and even warehouse deals which would be huge for me since I dont mind buying open-box glass to save a few hundred bucks if the glass is clean.

Ive played with the Keepa extension a little but the UI is honestly kind of a mess? Its like staring at a Bloomberg terminal for toasters. I need to know if the learning curve is actually worth it for someone who isnt a professional reseller. Here is what I am looking for specifically:

Faster-than-email notifications (do they do push alerts through an app or something?)

Tracking for Used

Like New specifically from Amazon Warehouse

Accuracy with lightning deals because Camel seems to miss those entirely half the time

Something that wont slow my browser down to a crawl since I keep like 50 tabs open

Is the paid version of Keepa the way to go here or am I overthinking this and just need to stick with what I know? I just feel like the Amazon pricing algorithms are getting way more aggressive and my old tools arent keeping up anymore...

@Reply #3 - good point! honestly, while everyone is focused on the cool gift ideas, i think we need to talk more about the actual reliability of these sites for your guests. if the platform is buggy, your older relatives are gonna get frustrated and just mail you a physical check or, worse, a plastic toaster you dont want. here are a few safety things to keep in mind:

cash funds often have high processing fees. make sure you know exactly who is paying that 3 percent.

fragmented registries like SoKind rely on the guest to manually mark items as purchased. in my experience, people forget this constantly, leading to duplicates.

broken links are a huge risk. when you link to small eco-shops, products go out of stock fast. if you want something stable for experiences, Share Product is a solid middle ground, but you still have to be the one to manage it regularly. i wouldnt just set it and forget it. you gotta check the links every week to make sure everything is still functioning correctly for your guests.

Honestly, I totally get the spreadsheet burnout... trying to scroll through columns while holding a shopping cart is a nightmare. If you are moving away from Excel, I would suggest checking out Christmas Gift List (the one with the red icon) or GiftPlanner, but be careful with the free versions. They sometimes get glitchy once you add more than 15 people or lots of photos. A few veteran tips for you:

Make sure to test the sync feature immediately. I have lost data before because my iPad and phone didnt talk to each other fast enough while I was in a store.

You might want to consider asking your family to share Amazon Wishlist links. It saves so much time instead of manually typing everything and helps stay on that strict budget.

Be wary of any app that doesnt let you export to a CSV, just in case the app crashes and you need to go back to your spreadsheet for the final tally. Just watch out for those apps that look super dated, they usually crash when you try to upload receipt photos. Stay organized or that $1800 is gonna disappear fast, ngl.

What are some actually decent apps for organizing Christmas shopping lists that dont feel like total junk? I’ve been a hardcore spreadsheet user for like a decade, usually just a simple Google Sheet or Excel mobile, but I’m totally overwhelmed this year and the mobile interface is killing me when I am actually in the aisles. My family expanded a ton since last year and now I’m looking at 24 people to shop for with a strict $1800 budget and I need something that can handle status tracking like bought, wrapped, and shipped because I have to send half these gifts to my cousins in Canada by the 15th.

I tried Santa's Bag and another one I can't even remember the name of but they felt so clunky and one of them kept glitching every time I tried to add a price or a specific store location. It’s already the first week of December and I havent even started yet so I’m starting to panic a little bit. I need something that syncs across devices because I like to add ideas on my iPad but check them off on my phone while I'm actually out. Do any of these apps actually have a barcode scanner that works properly? Or at least a way to attach photos of receipts so I dont lose track of what I actually spent?

I really need to get this sorted by this weekend or I’m gonna be that person doing express shipping on the 23rd again...
