I finally pulled the trigger on the a7C II and man the body is gorgeous but I am seriously struggling with the lens situation. I moved over from an a7R IV because I was honestly just done with the weight and the size of the whole kit and I thought this would be the perfect solution for my upcoming trip to Tokyo next month. But now that I have the camera in my hands all my G Master primes just look and feel completely ridiculous on it like the balance is just totally off and it feels like the lens is wearing the camera instead of the other way around. Its actually making me a bit anxious because I spent all this money on a compact setup and now it doesnt feel compact at all with my 35mm 1.4 hanging off the front.

Im really looking for that true rangefinder-style experience but I dont want to sacrifice too much on the image quality since the sensor is so good. Ive been looking at a few options but I keep second-guessing myself because I need something that can keep up with the autofocus but still fit into a small sling bag.

Here is what I am thinking for my requirements:

  • Budget is around $700 to $900 per lens and I am looking for two total for the trip.
  • Size is the biggest deal it has to be small enough that I dont look like a pro photographer while I am out for dinner or walking through crowds.
  • Weather sealing is a huge plus because I know it rains a lot in Japan this time of year.
  • I mostly shoot 35mm or 40mm focal lengths for street stuff and maybe a 20mm or 24mm for architecture.

I was looking at the Sony 40mm f2.5 G and it seems perfect size-wise but is f2.5 gonna be enough for night shots in Shinjuku or am I gonna regret not having a faster aperture? Or should I be looking at the Sigma 35mm f2 DG DN instead even though it is a bit heavier? I also saw some people mentioning the Samyang tiny series but I have had bad luck with their quality control in the past so I am kind of nervous about that. I really need to get this sorted in the next two weeks so I can get some practice in before my flight... has anyone actually used these on the newer 33MP sensor? Just worried about the resolution being too much for some of these smaller optics or if the autofocus can actually keep up with the real-time tracking...

Just found this thread and honestly you gotta look at the Sigma I-series primes if you want that rangefinder feel without losing out on build quality. Over the years I have tried basically every compact E-mount lens and the Sigma 35mm f2 DG DN Contemporary is a personal favorite for the a7C series. It is all-metal, has a dedicated aperture ring, and feels way more substantial than those plastic pancake lenses without being bulky like your G Masters. That extra stop of light over f2.5 actually makes a difference in those dark Tokyo backstreets where you want to keep your ISO at a reasonable level. For your wide end the Sigma 24mm f2 DG DN Contemporary is another gem. It hits your budget perfectly and the image quality easily keeps up with the 33MP sensor. I wouldnt worry about the resolution... modern optics from Sigma are insanely sharp. The AF is plenty fast for street stuff and it tracks eyes perfectly with the a7C II's AI chip. One tip: check the used market or places like MPB. You can usually grab these for around $500 to $600 each, leaving you way more cash for sushi and gear at Yodobashi Camera once you land. They have weather sealing at the mount, so a bit of drizzle wont kill them. Just grab a small sling and you are set. The magnetic lens caps they come with are kinda cool too tho I usually just stick to the hood.

Honestly, stick with the G compacts. I use the Sony FE 40mm f2.5 G and f2.5 is totally fine for night street shots since the sensor handles high ISO so well. For architecture, look at the Sony FE 24mm f2.8 G.

  • Weather sealed and tiny
  • Same 49mm filter threads
  • AF is basically instant The optics handle the 33MP resolution just fine and they actually balance properly on the a7C II body.

Stumbled upon this and just had to chime in because I went through the literal same panic last month! I totally get wanting to keep things tiny for travel. I ended up picking up the Sigma 35mm f2 DG DN Contemporary for my a7C II and honestly... I love it so much!! It is slightly heavier than the Sony G trio but that all-metal build feels so premium and the manual aperture ring is basically addictive to click lol. Regarding the f2.5 vs f2 thing, i found that f2 really helps when you are in those narrow Tokyo alleys where the light is super moody. The 33MP sensor is amazing with high ISO but having that extra bit of light makes the files look way cleaner when you are editing later. Plus the bokeh on the Sigma is just gorgeous for street portraits! I was worried about the resolution too but these lenses are sharp as a tack on the newer sensor so dont even worry about that part. For your wider lens, you should seriously look at the Sigma 24mm f2 DG DN Contemporary. It matches the 35mm perfectly so your bag stays consistent. Both are weather sealed too! It is such a fantastic combo and it fits right into a tiny 3L sling without any issues. You are gonna have such an amazing time in Japan with this setup! Let me know if you want to see some sample shots or anything!
