I've added the a9 III to my kit alongside my a1 and need a fast portrait prime that can handle the 120fps autofocus. I'm torn between the 85mm f/1.4 GM II and the 135mm f/1.8 GM. Is the newer 85mm significantly better for tracking? What’s your top recommendation for these high-speed bodies?
Just sharing my experience:
- Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II: pricey tracking
- Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 GM: total steal
Both do 120fps, but 135 is better value imo. works well tho
For your situation, I would suggest the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II. I’m still relatively new to using the Sony Alpha 9 III Mirrorless Camera, but I’ve found that keeping your gear updated is the most reliable way to ensure the autofocus holds up at 120fps. This lens was basically built for these newer sensors, so it works really well for tracking without any major issues. The Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 GM is a decent option too, but it might not be as future-proof for the highest burst rates as the newer 85mm is. It honestly depends on your needs, but yeah, the 85mm feels like a safer, more professional choice for a high-speed kit. Better to be cautious when ur investing this much in Sony Alpha 1 Mirrorless Camera glass so you dont run into any issues later!! Cheers.
unfortunately, ive found that the newer 85mm is not as good as expected for the price. the focus sometimes struggled to keep up during really fast movement on my a9 iii compared to my other glass. it is better than the old version, sure, but it is disappointing it isnt even faster. > Is the newer 85mm significantly better for tracking? before i give a final word tho, how far are you usually from your subjects? the 135mm is legendary if you have the room, but the working distance can be a total pain in smaller studios and i had issues with it being too tight in-studio. if you want the most reliable focus for 120fps, you should really look at:
