  • I spent months looking at the data before my last trip to Italy. Technically, the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD is a very decent option when you look at the price-to-performance ratio. While the Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS is a classic, the Tamron starting at f/2.8 is actually better for dimly lit church interiors. From a budget perspective, it makes more sense to save the cash. The Tamron is often $400 cheaper than the Sony, which pays for a lot of gelato.
  • Weight: 575g (Tamron) vs 663g (Sony)
  • Filter size: 67mm (Tamron) vs 77mm (Sony)
  • Minimum focus: Much better on the Tamron for food shots or close-ups I found the IBIS on the a7 IV handles the lack of lens stabilization just fine for stills. Unless you're shooting heavy video, the extra cost of the Sony doesnt really translate to better travel photos. It basically comes down to whether you value that extra 4mm on the wide end versus the 200mm reach.

@Reply #1 - good point! Honestly, you dont need to worry about stabilization with the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD since the a7 IV has 5.5 stops of IBIS. It is about $700 and weighs just 575g. If you want better optics for architecture, look at the Sony FE 20-70mm F4 G. That extra width at 20mm beats the Sony FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS for narrow city streets tho...

I would suggest being careful with aperture trade-offs for a single lens setup, tbh. Are you prioritizing total focal reach or needing a faster constant f-stop for low-light shots?
