What is the absolute best portrait lens for the Sony a1 flagship because I just bit the bullet and bought the body and now I’m kind of freaking out about which glass to pair it with. I’m currently torn between the Sony 50mm f/1.2 GM and the 85mm f/1.4 GM but I’m honestly so stuck because they both seem incredible for different reasons.

So here is the situation

  • I have a really big wedding shoot coming up in late October at a botanical garden in Seattle and the space is actually pretty tight for an indoor venue. I’m worried the 85mm might be too long for some of the couple shots if I can't back up enough but that compression is just so good for portraits. On the other hand everyone raves about the 50mm 1.2 being the sharpest thing ever and I feel like it might be more versatile for the cramped greenhouse areas.

I also keep looking at the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art since it’s way cheaper and leaves me money for extra batteries or a flash but I’m worried it won't keep up with the a1's 30fps or the insane eye-af tracking like native Sony glass would. My budget is pretty firm at $2,000 max because the a1 basically cleared out my bank account lol. I need something that is going to make those 50mp files really pop without any autofocus hunting because I definitely can't afford to miss the kiss or the walk down the aisle.

Is the 50mm 1.2 the way to go for the faster autofocus and the extra light or am I gonna regret not having that 85mm look for the solo bride shots? I've been staring at sample photos for hours and I just cant decide which one works better for the high res sensor on this beast of a camera...

Coming back to this... I would suggest being careful with the older 85mm GM since it might feel sluggish on the a1. To add to the point above:

  • Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM is way better for tight greenhouses so you wont be cramped.
  • Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 is actually faster at focusing than the 1.4 and fits your budget easily. Native lenses are just safer for that 30fps tracking honestly...

Just catching up on this. Ngl the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art Sony E caps at 15fps on the a1, so youd be nerfing your frame rate. The Sony FE 50mm f/1.2 GM is the better play for tight greenhouse spots. Its XD Linear motors handle 30fps tracking perfectly. Check out the Sony Alpha Blog for the AF speed charts... the 50mm is basically the gold standard for that sensor.

I've been super happy with the Sony FE 50mm f/1.2 GM. It worked perfectly for me in a tiny botanical garden last fall. Zero complaints. It just doesnt miss focus.
