So I finally pulled the trigger on a Sony a7 IV last month after saving up for ages and I'm honestly loving the sensor but I am getting so tired of swapping between my 35mm and 85mm primes whenever I'm out walking around. I have a big trip to Tokyo coming up in three weeks and I really just want one lens that can stay on the camera 90% of the time.
I've been looking at the Sony 24-70 GM II and its obviously the gold standard but man that price tag is steep like $2300 is basically my whole remaining travel budget lol. Then there is the new Sigma 24-70 Art II which everyone says is basically just as good for way less money. Or maybe the Tamron 28-75 G2? I'm worried the 28mm on the wide end wont be enough for some of the tight streets or architecture over there. Money is a bit of a factor but I dont want to regret the purchase later if the autofocus isnt snappy enough for street shots.
Is the GM II actually worth double the price of the Tamron for a hobbyist or should I just get the Sigma and spend the extra cash on better food while I am traveling?
> Is the GM II actually worth double the price Honestly, you might want to consider the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art II. Be careful with that budget, extra cash buys way more ramen in Tokyo!
Make sure to prioritize the wide end since 28mm feels cramped in Tokyos narrow alleys. I would suggest looking closely at the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II Art. Its got new linear motors for significantly faster autofocus and the optical resolution is nearly indistinguishable from the GM. Saving over $1000 while keeping 24mm is the smartest move. Be careful with the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 as you might regret missing that extra field of view for architecture.
Regarding what #2 said about 'Make sure to prioritize the wide end since 28mm feels cramped'... man, they are spot on! 28mm is just way too tight for those massive Tokyo intersections and narrow alleys. I love my a7 IV and honestly the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II Art is the absolute sweet spot for it. It's fantastic for street stuff because the new AF motors are just crazy fast. You really dont need to drop $2300 to get pro results anymore. Here is what I'd do:
