I recently picked up a Sony a7 IV and I’m blown away by the autofocus, but my current lenses just don’t have the reach I need for sports. I’m starting to shoot my nephew’s soccer games and some local track meets, so I need a telephoto zoom that can keep up. Since I’m on a tighter budget after buying the camera, I’m looking for something under $1,100. I’ve been looking at the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 for the fast aperture, but would the Sigma 100-400mm be better for the extra reach outdoors? Which budget-friendly zoom do you think handles fast action best on the a7 IV?
In my experience shooting my kids' games for years, that choice between reach and speed is the classic dilemma! Honestly, if you're doing soccer and track, you’re gonna find that 180mm is basically too short unless your standing right on the sideline. Here's what I recommend:
- Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS Contemporary: This is the winner for outdoor sports. The extra reach is a literal life saver when the action is on the other side of the field.
- Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD: Amazing for indoor stuff, but you'll be cropping like crazy for outdoor soccer.
- Sony FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS: It works as a middle ground, but the Sigma still out-reaches it. I'd go for the Sigma 100-400mm tbh. Your Sony a7 IV has such good high ISO performance that the slower aperture wont really hurt you during daytime games. Good luck!!!
Sooo i'm a bit late to the party but i've spent years shooting field sports and honestly, reach is king for soccer. In my experience, even 200mm feels like a wide-angle lens when the action is on the other side of the pitch! While the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD is sharp as a tack, you’ll end up cropping so much that you’ll basically lose that Sony Alpha a7 IV resolution anyway. There's a great resource at **The-Digital-Picture** where you can compare the sharpness of the Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS Contemporary against more expensive glass... it’s actually surprising how well it holds up for the price. I mean, f/6.3 is slow, but for outdoor soccer, it’s usually totally fine during the day. Pro tips for the a7 IV sports setup: * Set your AF-C to 'Priority Set in AF-C' -> 'Release' to make sure the shutter fires exactly when you hit it, even if focus isnt 100% locked yet (helps for bursts).
* Stick to a minimum shutter speed of 1/1000s or 1/1250s to freeze the ball... anything lower and you'll get motion blur, especially at 400mm lol. Also, check out **MPB** or **KEH** for a used Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS. I've tried many setups and that lens is the gold standard because of the internal zoom—your balance doesnt shift when tracking a runner. But yeah, if $1,100 is the hard cap, get the Sigma and just shoot on sunny days. You're gonna love that reach!! Cheers
