So I finally picked up an a7 IV and now Im stuck in the lens rabbit hole. My logic was that a 24-70mm is the ultimate workhorse but man the options are stressful. I've been looking at the Sony GM II because everyone says it's the king but that $2300 price tag is making my wallet cry. I also saw the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN II just came out and it's way more in my budget range but I keep seeing conflicting stuff about the autofocus speed compared to native glass.
I'm shooting a wedding for my cousin in Seattle next month—not a pro gig just helping out—and I really dont want to miss shots because the lens was hunting or something. I found some threads saying the Sigma is basically 95% of the Sony but then others say the weight makes a huge difference if you're carrying it all day. I've got about $1600 saved up for this and I really dont want to go over that if I can help it.
The Tamron is tempting because it's so light but I'm worried 28mm isnt wide enough for the indoor venue shots. Does the extra 4mm on the wide end really matter that much in tight spaces or am I overthinking this...
I've been using the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II Art for a few months and im very satisfied with how it handles. It fits your budget and the autofocus works well for weddings. No complaints here.
To add to the point above, that 24mm wide end is a total lifesaver! I once shot a wedding in a cramped Seattle venue with a 28mm and it was a nightmare getting everyone in frame. Everyone here is spot on... the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II Art is amazing! The new HLA motor is stupidly fast. Use the leftover $400 for a Sony HVL-F46RM Wireless Radio Flash and you are golden!
^ This. Also, that 24mm width is crucial. In my experience, the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II Art is the safest bet for tight indoor venues where 28mm just wont cut it.
