I have about 1200 dollars to spend and I'm completely torn between just getting the Sony 85mm f1.8 and saving some cash or going for the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 Art since it seems more versatile. The Sigma is just so heavy though and I'm worried about my wrists after ten hours of shooting. Is the extra reach of the 85mm worth losing the zoom for portraits when things get crowded? Which one should I just pull the trigger on already...

Man I am stressing out lol. I have a huge wedding shoot coming up in like two weeks in Sedona and I just upgraded to the a7R V but now I am staring at my lens bag and realizing none of my old glass is gonna cut it with that 61 megapixel sensor. I spent way too much on the body and now I need the absolute best portrait prime that wont make the images look soft when I crop in.

I have been reading a ton of reviews and I am stuck between the Sony 85mm f1.4 GM and the newer 50mm f1.2 GM. Some people say the 85mm is the king for portraits but then I read other threads saying the AF is slow compared to the newer motors and that the 50mm is actually sharper on the high res sensors. But then there is the Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN which is way cheaper and apparently just as sharp? I dont want to buy something and then regret it when I see the eye autofocus missing shots during the ceremony because the lens motor couldnt keep up with the camera.

Here is what I am looking for:

Budget is around $1800 to $2200 max

Must handle the a7RV 61MP sensor without getting mushy at the edges

Fast autofocus is a must because the couple is doing a lot of movement

Needs that really creamy bokeh for those desert sunset shots

Not too heavy if possible because we are hiking a bit to the spot

Is the 85mm GM still worth it in 2024 or am I better off going with the 50mm or even a different brand like the Samyang stuff? I am literally shaking looking at my bank account but I need to make a decision by Friday so I can get it delivered and test it out before the flight. Does the 1.2 vs 1.4 really make that much of a difference for the price jump on this specific body?

So I finally pulled the trigger on an FX3 to pair with my a7sIII and now I'm staring at my empty lens mount trying to figure out what to buy before I head to Tokyo next month for this documentary project I'm shooting. I'm gonna be doing a mix of run-and-gun street stuff and some more formal sit-down interviews. My budget is pretty flexible, maybe around $2k to $2.5k for the main workhorse lens.

I've been looking at the 24-70mm GM II because obviously the native autofocus is supposed to be insane and it's light, but then I keep seeing guys on YouTube talking about the Tamron 35-150mm f2-2.8 being the king of all-around lenses. The range sounds amazing for not having to swap glass in the middle of a crowd, but I'm worried it's gonna be way too heavy for a long day of handheld shooting and maybe the AF wont keep up as well as the Sony glass? I also saw some people mentioning the 24-105mm G but f4 feels like it might be a struggle for those low light indoor shots in the smaller shops.

Sony 24-70mm GM II

Tamron 35-150mm

Sony 24-105mm G (maybe too slow?)

If you guys could only bring one lens for a gig where you don't know what's coming next, what are you picking for these bodies?

I was thinking maybe the 35mm one because people said it fits more in the frame? But then I saw a video saying 50mm is better for the blurry background thing and now im just annoyed because i dont want to carry a huge heavy thing around. I bought the 24-70 GM II thinking it was the dream but its just way too heavy and bulky for long walks. I took it to Kyoto last week and my neck was literally killing me by noon every day and the balance on the tiny a7C II body is just off. I feel like I wasted so much money on something I hate carrying. Budget is around 1200 since Ill sell the GM and I need it before a trip to Italy next month.

Honestly I am just so fed up with my current kit right now because I keep missing the most important shots while I'm fumbling around swapping primes on my FX3. I love the look of my 35mm and 85mm but for this documentary project I'm starting in Seattle next month—it is a series on micro-breweries—I just cant keep stopping the action every five minutes to change glass. It is driving me absolutely crazy and I feel like I am wasting the potential of this camera. My logic was that I could just "make it work" with what I had but after a test shoot in a cramped cellar yesterday I realized I'm losing all the best organic moments because I am too slow.

I am getting really excited about finally just biting the bullet and getting a proper pro zoom but I am completely stuck on which one actually feels like a real cinema tool and not just a glorified photography lens. I was looking at the Sony 28-135mm f/4 because of the power zoom and the fact that it is actually designed for video but then I read some stuff online saying it is getting a bit old and maybe isnt sharp enough for 4K anymore? Is that true? Because if I am dropping over two grand I want it to be crisp. Then I thought okay maybe the Tamron 35-150mm because that f/2-2.8 range is insane for low light in those dark bars but does it have that "cinematic" soul or is it just gonna look like a generic wedding video? I am also worried about the weight since I am gonna be handheld for like 8 hours a day.
