I’ve been using my Sony RX100 VII for travel vlogging lately, and while the 4K video is stunning, the internal audio is really struggling with wind noise outdoors. Since this is the only model in the series with a 3.5mm mic jack, I want to take advantage of it! I’m looking for something super compact so I don't ruin the 'pocketable' vibe of the camera. I'm worried about larger mics blocking the flip-up screen or requiring a bulky cage. Have any of you found a specific shotgun or vlogging mic that fits well without needing tons of extra mounting gear? What’s your go-to microphone setup for keeping the RX100 lightweight but sounding professional?
In my experience, iirc the biggest mistake is overcomplicating things. I used a cage but it killed the 'pocketable' vibe... 1. Sony ECM-G1 Ultracompact Shotgun Microphone: Tiny, runs off the jack, and won't block the screen.
2. Rode VideoMicro Compact On-Camera Microphone: Better sound but needs a mounting bracket. Lesson learned? Spend the $150 on the Sony ECM-G1 Ultracompact Shotgun Microphone to keep it simple. gl!
So basically the consensus is that you’re looking at the Sony ECM-G1 Ultracompact Shotgun Microphone for pure size or the Movo VXR10 Universal Video Microphone for value. Honestly, I've seen so many people buy huge rigs and then hate carrying them... it's a total vibe killer! If you want the ultimate budget-friendly, 'no-cage' setup:
- Grab the Saramonic SR-XM1 3.5mm TRS Omnidirectional Microphone for around $25-$30.
- It plugs directly into the jack (no messy cables to snag!).
- It's so tiny it literally won't block the screen at all. I use this when I wanna be lowkey and it’s fantastic. Just a warning tho—since it's omnidirectional, it picks up more background noise than a shotgun, but it's sooo much better than the internal mic. Just grab a tiny deadcat for it and you're golden. GL!
Totally agree with the above! Especially about that Sony mic, its super tiny but can be a bit pricey. If youre on a budget, I actually used the Movo VXR10 Universal Video Microphone for my last trip. Its basically a much cheaper version of the Rode—usually under $40—and it actually comes with a furry windscreen in the box, which helps SO much with that wind noise you mentioned. Since the RX100 VII doesnt have a shoe mount, I really didnt want a full cage either... totally ruins the vibe. I just picked up a cheap SmallRig Cold Shoe Extension 2044 bracket. Its just a tiny piece of metal that screws into the bottom. It keeps the mic off to the side so it doesnt block the screen at all. Its a pretty solid setup that keeps things light and way cheaper than buying a whole new rig. Honestly, it works great for keeping things lowkey. Good luck!
Honestly, I have been down this rabbit hole and if you want reliability above all else, just go with one of the wireless systems from Rode. You basically cant go wrong with their stuff. I eventually moved away from on-camera shotgun mics because they always felt a bit flimsy or picked up lens motor noise, whereas a wireless kit lets you keep the camera tiny while getting crisp sound every time. If you really prefer a wired setup tho, honestly any of the compact mics from Sony are gonna be your best bet because the compatibility is just seamless. Ive found that going with the big name brands saves so much frustration in the long run even if they cost a bit more... totally worth it for the peace of mind imo. Nothing is worse than getting home and finding out your audio failed because of a cheap connection.
