Which compact grip is actually worth getting for the RX100 VII? Im torn between the official Sony VCT-SGR1 and that SmallRig L-shape wooden grip thingy. I am heading to Tokyo in two weeks and need something that doesnt add too much bulk cuz Im trying to travel light with just a small sling bag. The Sony one seems cool because of the remote buttons but it looks kinda flimsy and short? The SmallRig looks way more comfortable for my hands but then I lose the tripod functionality. My budget is around 80 or 90 bucks max. Is there a better third option I missed or should I just stick with the Sony one even if it feels like a toy?

Honestly, I spent way too much money testing these out and ended up disappointed by the official gear. The Sony VCT-SGR1 Shooting Grip is basically a glorified plastic stick. Its way too short for anyone with normal sized hands and the buttons feel mushy after a few months. Total waste of money if you ask me. Instead of blowing your whole 90 dollar budget on that, look at these:

Tokyo was amazing! Here is a technical comparison:

  • I actually think people overthink the grip situation and waste cash. In my experience, you just adapt to the camera size eventually. Honestly, when I was in Tokyo last fall, I stopped caring about gear because the street food was so distracting. Spent way too much time hunting for the perfect takoyaki stand instead of shooting. The queues were insane but totally worth it. Pretty sure I gained five pounds that week... anyway lol.
