I recently picked up a Sony RX100 VII to use as my daily carry and travel camera. While I absolutely love the photo quality and the fact that it fits in my jacket pocket, I am really struggling with the ergonomics. The body is just so smooth and small that I feel like I am going to drop it every time I pull it out to take a quick shot. It literally feels like a slippery bar of soap in my hands sometimes!

I have been looking at a few options to improve the handling before I head out on a hiking trip next month. I saw the official Sony AG-R2 attachment which looks simple, but I have also seen some bulkier metal brackets from brands like SmallRig. I am really torn on which direction to go. I want something that helps me get a solid one-handed hold without making the camera too big to fit in a small pouch.

A few things I am looking for in a grip:

  • It should not block the battery or SD card door.
  • It needs to stay attached firmly without peeling off.
  • Ideally, it would have some texture to it.

For those of you who have used these cameras for a while, which grip attachment have you found to be the most reliable and comfortable for long days of shooting?

Honestly, if you are worried about it slipping out of your hands while hiking, you really want something more substantial than a piece of rubber stuck on with adhesive. I have seen those peel off in the heat before, which is the last thing you want when you are out on a trail. Safety first, especially with such an expensive piece of glass. I would highly recommend looking at the SmallRig L-Shape Grip for Sony RX100 III IV V VI VII 2467. It is a metal bracket that screws directly into the tripod mount on the bottom. Since it is physically bolted on, it is never gonna budge or peel. What is cool about this specific model is that it adds a bit of height and a nice molded grip for your fingers to wrap around. It makes the camera feel way more secure for one-handed shooting without adding much bulk. It also has a built-in Arca-Swiss plate if you ever use a tripod, and most importantly, it is designed so you can still swap the battery and SD card without taking the grip off. Another solid option if you want a bit more texture is the JJC Metal Hand Grip for Sony RX100 Series HG-RX100. It uses a similar screw-in design but has a slightly different feel to the material. Just make sure whatever you get has that bottom clearance. Those little cameras are pricey, so having that metal frame around the bottom basically provides a safety buffer against bumps and scratches too. Tbh, once you mount a real bracket, you wont ever want to go back to the bare body.

Just catching up on this thread now and I noticed nobody mentioned the thumb grip route yet. Tbh, if you want a solid one-handed hold without adding bulk or spending a fortune on a full cage, a thumb grip is a game changer. It slides into the hot shoe and gives your thumb a place to lock in, which makes that slippery soap feeling disappear instantly. Since you mentioned being budget-conscious after buying the VII, I would suggest looking at something like the Lensmate RX100 VII Folding Thumb Grip. It is a bit of an investment new, but you can often find used ones on sites like Fred Miranda or even eBay for way less. Another super cheap trick I have used for years is just getting some Dragon Grip Anti-Slip Grip Tape. You can cut small pieces and put them exactly where your fingers naturally rest. It sounds a bit DIY, but it sticks better than the official Sony grip and costs like five bucks for a whole sheet. Also, definitely check out the r/RX100 subreddit or the DPReview forums. There are always people selling off their old accessories when they upgrade. I managed to snag a JJC HG-RX100 Metal Hand Grip for half price last year just by keeping an eye on the classifieds. It gives you that solid feel without the SmallRig price tag. Just make sure whatever you get does not block that battery door, cause swapping cards on a hike is annoying enough as it is without having to unscrew a plate every time.

Hey there! Congrats on the VII, it's a beast of a little camera. I totally get the soap bar thing lol. Ive used several RX100s over the years and honestly the first thing I do is fix the grip before I even take it outside. If you want to keep it as pocketable as possible, you really cant beat the Sony AG-R2 Attachment Grip. It's super simple, basically just a textured rubber piece that sticks to the front with 3M adhesive. I was worried about it peeling off too, but mine has stayed on through humidity and heat during hiking for over two years without budging once. It adds just enough of a lip for your fingers to catch. It's usually around $15. However, since you mentioned a hiking trip, you might want something more substantial. I currently use the SmallRig L-Shape Grip for Sony RX100 III IV V VI VII 2434 on mine. It adds a bit of height which is great if you have larger hands so your pinky doesnt just dangle off the bottom. The best part is the bottom plate has a built-in Arca-Swiss rail for tripods and it definitely doesnt block the battery or SD card door. It makes the camera feel way more rugged and secure for one-handed shots. One quick tip tho... whatever you choose, definitely get a decent wrist strap like the Peak Design Cuff Camera Wrist Strap. It's saved my camera from a nasty drop more than once when I was scrambling over rocks. Enjoy the hiking trip!
