I finally pulled the trigger on the Sony RX100 VII for my trip to Rome next week but man this thing is so tiny and slippery its driving me crazy. Im legit terrified im gonna drop it on a cobblestone street and break it before I even get one good shot. I need a solid leather case like yesterday. Im basically torn between the official Sony LCJ-RXK jacket and that Gariz half case everyone talks about. The Sony one seems more protective but looks kind of bulky while the Gariz looks better but idk if it actually adds enough grip. My budget is like $100 max and I need it by Friday... which one should I go with?
Jumping in real quick because I've been down this road before. A few years back I took my older RX100 to Florence-similar cobblestones, similar stress levels-and I went with a generic leather case that looked classy but was a nightmare in practice. I was trying to capture the sunset over the Arno river when my SD card filled up. Because that specific case didnt have a cutout, I had to fumble with a coin to unscrew the base while balancing the camera on a stone ledge. Nearly dropped the whole rig into the water. Never again. If youre dead set on leather, be super careful about access. Some of those vintage-style cases look amazing but block the battery door and the ports. I eventually switched to the MegaGear Ever Ready Leather Camera Case for Sony RX100 VII MG1720 because it actually includes a swivel bottom. It lets you swap batteries without stripping the camera naked every time. Also, just a heads up... those leather surfaces can be kinda slick too until they're broken in. You might actually want to consider the Sony AG-R2 Attachment Grip as well. It is just a small rubber piece that sticks to the front, but it gives your fingers something to actually hook onto so the camera doesnt slide out of your hand while youre dodging Vespas. TL;DR: Avoid any case that requires unscrewing the base to get to the battery. Look for the MegaGear model with the bottom flap or just add a stick-on grip for better handling.
^ This. Also, check the Lim's Design Leather Half Case for Sony RX100 VII. Its got a metal baseplate for extra safety... which is way better if youre worried about those cobblestones, tbh.
Rome is amazing but those cobblestones will absolutely murder your camera if you drop it. If you're really worried about safety like I am, you should probably skip the half case and go with the Sony LCJ-RXK Jacket Case. I know it looks a bit chunky compared to the Gariz, but it covers the top and the lens which is where most the damage happens during a fall. The Gariz Sony RX100 VII Half Case HG-RX100M7 is gorgeous, ngl, but it leaves the top wide open. If you trip on a sidewalk near the Colosseum, that half case isn't doing much for the screen or the pop-up EVF... and those repairs are pricey. One thing to be careful about tho... the Sony jacket can be a bit slow to get open when you see a quick shot. Still, the peace of mind is worth it for a trip like this. I would suggest making sure you also have a solid wrist strap because the grip on these tiny RX100s is basically non-existent. You might want to consider the Peak Design Cuff Camera Wrist Strap if you want extra security. Honestly, I'd stay away from anything too cheap that doesn't screw in tight. Make sure to double check shipping times on Amazon so you actually get it by Friday. You dont want to be panicking at the airport without a case. Just be careful with the battery door on the Sony one, it can be a bit finicky sometimes.
